11 bit studios recently revealed the third and the final expansion for Frostpunk, On the Edge, and now the developer has released its gameplay trailer. The new gameplay video gives us our very first glimpse at the new expansion and what we can expect from this brutal conclusion to an epic game. During the video, Frostpunk’s Lead Game Designer, Jakub Stokalski guides us through the additions.
According to the new gameplay trailer, On The Edge revolves around themes of trust and loyalty. You are assigned as the leader of a newly formed Outpost, settled near a newly-found Army Warehouse, and you are kept on a tight least from New London. You are forced to transfer all of your precious findings back to the headquarters however at the same time, you must rely on scarce food deliveries and laws enforced by your supervisor. You must forge a delicate balance in these conditions to pull-through.
Each decision you make in the game will introduce new potential risks and unknowns that are only revealed when it is too late to rectify them. When your scouts discover an alternate food source, you start to think about surviving on your own. As the game progresses, you discover even more Settlements in the wild that are willing to cooperate with you. You will need to gain their loyalty, but once you do, you can designate trade routes between new allies and regain control over your Book of Laws.
All of this will give you an opportunity to form a strong and independent union and stop depending on New London. However, creating foundations for a new community is not easy and you will have to overcome tons of new difficulties. You will also have to confront New London along with other Settlements. It will be a true test of your diplomatic skills. With all of this going on, you will of course need to look out for your people and worry about your own survival as well.
On The Edge key features include:
- Choose your truce – Can you trust other communities? Should you respect their ways of survival or bend them to your will?
- Establish an economical union with other outposts using the Transport Depot.
- Help develop other Settlements by fulfilling their requests.
- Construct safe routes on the Frostland and exchange surplus resources for those you lack.
- Discover 16 brand new areas of the Frostland and revisit some of the old sites – learning their fate after the Great Storm.
- Communicate with other communities thanks to brand new UI in the Administration building.
- Try to survive without control over the Book of Laws.
- Enable new mechanics available in the Endless Mode.
Frospunk: On The Edge is slated for release on August 20, 2020, on PC via Steam, GOG.com, and Humble Store.
