Escape the Kitchen Sink as Sponges in Sponge Break, An Upcoming 1-Player Co-op Rafting Game

Sponge Break

Developer Goose Byte Games and publisher Balor Games have announced Sponge Break, a new co-op rafting adventure where up to four players take control of sentient sponges attempting to escape the dangers of the kitchen sink. Alongside the reveal, the developers have also launched a public playtest, with invitations rolling out in waves through July 28.

In Sponge Break, players navigate fast-moving rivers aboard a fragile raft that can easily fall apart if things go wrong. The game supports solo play as well as drop-in online co-op for up to four players, allowing friends to join a session at any time.

Working together is key to surviving the journey. Players must steer through dangerous rapids, solve environmental puzzles, avoid hazards, and even battle hostile beavers while trying to keep their raft intact. Thanks to the game’s physics-driven mechanics, a single mistake can flip the raft, scatter supplies, damage the team, and quickly derail the run.

Sponge Break also features proximity voice chat, with the sponge characters lip-syncing to players’ voices during gameplay. Players also have access to a plunger that doubles as a grappling hook, letting them pull objects toward the raft and recover useful resources.

To make their sponges unique, players can customize them with over 100 unlockable cosmetic items, ranging from facial expressions and hats to inflatable buoys and plungers. The adventure also spans multiple environments, including sewers, rivers, and abandoned facilities, with safehouses serving as rest stops between levels.

Players interested in trying Sponge Break early can sign up for the ongoing playtest, with invitations being distributed in waves through July 28. The full list of platforms has not been revealed as of now, but the PC Steam page for the game is currently live where you can add it to your wishlist.
