This Gothic 1 Remake Guide details how you can master the art of lockpicking in the game and open some locked chests for cool loot. Opening locked chests in Gothic 1 Remake isn’t as simple as carrying a Lockpick. Every lock has its own puzzle, and you will need to pay attention to how the different parts move together. It may seem confusing at first, especially as a beginner, but once you understand the basics, opening chests becomes much easier.
Lockpicking Guide – Gothic 1 Remake
Whenever you find a locked chest without its key, you can try opening it if you have a Lockpick in your inventory. Doing so starts a lockpicking puzzle where your goal is to position several lock plates correctly.
Each plate contains a small pin that starts in a different position. Your job is to move these pins left or right until every one of them reaches the correct spot. When a pin is lined up properly, it rises slightly above the plate and displays a small red mark, letting you know it has been set correctly.
The challenge comes from the way the lock is designed. Moving one plate often causes other plates to move at the same time. Sometimes several plates slide in the same direction, while in other cases one plate may move left as another shifts right. Because of this, every movement can change more than one part of the puzzle.
Not every plate is connected, though. Some move on their own without affecting the others, making them much easier to position once the rest of the lock has been sorted out.
Be Careful with Your Lockpicks
Lockpicks are easy to break, especially before you have improved your lockpicking skill. If you try to push a pin farther than the lock allows, the chest will shake. This acts as a warning that you have made a mistake.
The first warning doesn’t immediately destroy your Lockpick, but repeating the same mistake will snap it.
Tips for Opening Chests More Easily
Before attempting any difficult lock, consider saving your game. This gives you the option to reload if you run out of Lockpicks or make too many mistakes.
During the early stages of the game, try collecting any Lockpicks you find instead of buying them. This helps you save valuable Nuggets, although you can always purchase more later if needed.
As a beginner, remember that you have a little room for error. One incorrect move only gives you a warning, while the second mistake will break the Lockpick.
When working on a lock, it helps to move each plate a few times before trying to solve the puzzle. This lets you see which plates affect the others and which ones move independently. Once you understand the connections, the puzzle becomes much easier to manage.
It is also a good idea to deal with the connected plates first. Leave the plates that move on their own until the end, since they can usually be placed in their correct positions without affecting the rest of the lock.
Improving Your Lockpicking Skill
Your character begins the game as an inexperienced lockpicker, but you can become much better by learning from the right NPC.
One of the first trainers you will meet is Fingers in the Old Camp. Before speaking with him, talk to Diego and ask who teaches skills around the camp. He will point you toward Fingers.
After meeting him, you will receive the side quest A Ring for Fingers, which also gives you a chance to practice lockpicking. Once you have completed what is needed and can pay 10 LP along with 100 Ore, Fingers will train you and upgrade your lockpicking ability.
Benefits of Becoming a Trained Lockpicker
Learning the lockpicking skill makes opening chests much easier. If your Lockpick breaks, your progress on the current lock is no longer completely reset.
The training also lets you make up to four mistakes before your Lockpick breaks. Another useful benefit is that two of the connected lock pieces become separated, reducing the number of plates that move together.
