This Solarpunk Guide details how you can build a Greenhouse in the game and create a safe space for your crops to grow. Storms can become a real problem once your crops are fully grown, since lightning can destroy them and force you to wait for new plants to mature again. While you can recover the seeds, losing a harvest slows everything down. Building a greenhouse is the best way to protect your farm from unexpected outcomes.
Building Greenhouse Guide – Solarpunk
The most important part of a greenhouse is the roof. Your crops are only protected if the ceiling completely covers the area. Even small openings can allow lightning to reach the plants during storms. At the same time, sunlight still needs to pass through, which means the roof must be made from transparent materials. Glass is perfect for this because wooden or brick ceilings block the light and stop crops from growing.
Apart from these requirements, the design is completely flexible. You can use different materials for the walls, add multiple floors, and create a farm as large as you want. Before starting, choose a spacious location and gather plenty of wood, sticks, and glass.
Building the Base
Start by equipping the Build-Hammer and placing foundations where you want your greenhouse to stand. Every foundation piece requires three pieces of wood, so larger projects will need a good supply of materials.
Once the floor is finished, begin adding walls. These do not have to be made entirely from glass. As long as light enters from above, wooden walls work perfectly fine. If you decide to use glass walls or ceiling pieces, remember that they require both glass and sticks to craft.
Sealing the Roof
Covering the top of the greenhouse is the step that matters most. Flat and angled glass pieces both work, so you can choose whichever style you prefer. The key is making sure the roof is fully enclosed to keep storms out while still allowing sunlight to reach the crops below.
You can leave openings for doors or entrances without causing problems. As long as the ceiling itself remains sealed, your plants will stay safe from lightning.
Another useful detail is that crops and Growboxes do not block sunlight. Because of this, you can stack several layers of farming areas on top of each other. Creating multiple floors is an easy way to fit more crops into a single greenhouse.
Preparing Space for Crops
With the structure finished, it is time to turn it into a working farm. Growboxes are ideal for indoor farming because they allow crops to be placed on foundations or glass floors. They become available at Tier 6 and cost four pieces of wood each.
Crafting twenty-four Growboxes is a good starting point, although you can always expand later. Producing that amount requires ninety-six wood in total.
Setting Up Automatic Watering
Although watering crops manually is possible, sprinklers make the process much easier. Their recipe becomes available when you unlock the Energy Bench. Every sprinkler requires five iron and five copper, so making three sprinklers uses fifteen iron and fifteen copper altogether.
A simple setup is to place a sprinkler in the middle of a 3×3 area and surround it with Growboxes. Repeating this arrangement three times gives enough room for twenty-four crops. If you want a bigger farm, you can always add more sections later.
Providing Power
Sprinklers need electricity to work, with each one consuming 40 power. Three sprinklers therefore require 120 Energy in total. Two Solar Panels can provide enough energy since they produce between 70 and 100 power each.
You will also need cables to connect everything. Cables are crafted two at a time and require two iron and two copper. Each connection between a power source and a sprinkler needs one cable.
There are several power options available depending on your progression. Solar Panels unlock at Tier 1 and require eight iron, eight copper, and eight glass. They provide between 70 and 100 power. Windmills become available at Tier 3 and use eight iron, eight copper, fifteen silicon, and fifteen cobalt while producing around 200 power.
At Tier 4, Sky Turbines can be unlocked. They need thirty cloths, one Circuit Board, and twenty irons. The Circuit Board itself requires ten algae, five copper, and five cobalt. A Sky Turbine produces 600 power. Wooden Windmills unlock at Tier 5 and cost forty wood, twenty iron, and fifteen copper while supplying 400 power.
Growing Your Crops
After powering the sprinklers, all that is left is planting seeds. Unlocking the Tier 6 Seedspack research allows you to craft seeds yourself instead of waiting to find more. Every seed costs four units of the crop it belongs to.
Once everything is running, your greenhouse can continue producing crops in a protected environment. That is all for this guide. Additional Solarpunk guides are listed below:
