Torn Away Portrays the Reality of War Trauma from a Child’s Perspective

Torn Away

Publisher Nordcurrent and developer perelesoq have announced their latest project Torn Away which is about portraying the reality of war trauma from a child’s perspective. The game uses a completely new and non-violent way to depict how World War II affected the life of a 10-year old girl Asya. The game sheds light on difficult themes with its unique point of view and heartfelt story coupled with beautiful art and emotional music.

Torn Away is set in a world ravaged by war and you follow the story of Asya, a 10-year old girl who is torn away from her home. Joining millions of other people suffering the same fate like hers, she has to become an Ostarbeiter, a common worker in a forced labor camp. Times are dark for her however she finds a glimmer of hope and finally manages to run away from the camp. Her destination is her home however on her way, she must avoid violence at all costs.

Asya has to hide, sneak and evade the enemy soldiers and try her best to remain in the shadows at all costs. Through her journey, not only will she come face-to-face with enemy soldiers but also harsh elements of nature and her own basic needs which are food and shelter. It is the ultimate test for Asya as she has to survive without losing her humanity. Check out the reveal trailer for the game below:

The reveal teaser reveals the brilliant art style of the game as it blends art and history together. The impactful story of the game is based on children’s war diaries that focus on World War II from a different and more tragic perspective that is through the eyes of a child. The game’s soundtrack has been developed by Vasily Kashnikov who is known for his work on Pathologic 2. Artūras Surgutanovas, Nordcurrent’s Head of Marketing said:

We’re proud to show Torn Away to the world since we believe that in these difficult times, our dignity, humanity, and family are the only real things we need to hold on to. Our everyday struggles differ very much from what Asya experiences, but her journey should help us understand what matters most in our lives. And we all know that even today, children are torn from their parents, even though they’re only looking for a better place to live. We can only hope that the game will help our viewers reconsider their views on the justification of war, the problems of emigration, or the isolation of children.
