2020 is not looking too great for different video game conventions around the world. We already knew that this year, E3 2020 has been canceled alongside GDC 2020 and a lot of other gaming conventions. The latest gaming convention to be canceled because of the ongoing pandemic is Tokyo Game Show 2020 however in its place, a digital event will take place so we still have something to look forward to.
As detailed on the official Tokyo Game Show 2020 website, the TGS Management Office detailed that the physical event has been canceled but its format will be used to organize a digital event instead which everyone can experience online from the safety of their homes. Their official statement details:
Tokyo Game Show 2020(TGS2020), scheduled to be held from September 24 (Thu.) to 27 (Sun.), 2020, is now planned to take place online. TGS2020, which is usually held at Makuhari Messe, is canceled.
Due to the outbreak of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) on a global scale and the situation remains unpredictable in Japan as well, the organizer and the co-organizers have reached this decision after a long consideration to place the utmost priority on the health and safety of visitors, exhibitors and stakeholders. We ask for your kind understanding and cooperation.
More information will be announced as needed on the official website and press releases from late May.
The TGS Management Office will reveal new information soon about what will be the format of the online show and will it take place during the same dates as the physical event or new dates will be announced for the event. With nearly every major gaming convention out of question for at least 2020, everyone is switching to online livestreams for their reveals and announcements such as the recent Inside Xbox livestream which showcased the very first gameplay reveal of the upcoming Xbox Series X and the LudoNarraCon 2020 which was an exceptional online event for indie developers.
