Combat Guide – Zombie Army 4: Dead Army

Our Zombie Army 4: Dead Army Combat Guide details everything that you need to know about combat in Zombie Army 4: Dead Army.

Use Custom Loadouts

It goes without saying but you must always opt for weapons that are most suited for your own gameplay. Your main weapon will always be a sniper rifle but you get a decent selection among them as well. Pick the one that suits your playstyle and continue to upgrade it over the course of the campaign. When it comes to secondary weapons, you have a much more diverse selection to go for.

The tab says ‘Shotgun’ but once you enter the tab, it will show you machine guns and LMGs as well. These are your secondary weapons and they are equally important as your primary weapons. You must choose a custom secondary weapon as well and then continue to upgrade it as you play the game. Your secondary weapon will always save your skin in tight spots so make sure that you pick one that is most suitable to your own gameplay style. Each comes with its own perks and weaknesses.

Apart from your primary and secondary weapon, you can also pick a third weapon which is a pistol. You will use these pistols in very few occasions. The only use I could find for these pistols is protecting myself while picking up items and delivering them to their locations. If you have picked up something such as a cog or a fuel can, you will only have 1 empty hand and these pistols are your only weapon unless your second hand becomes free again. These have very little impact in combat so while considering upgrades, these should be your last priority.

Also included in your build are your Super Melee Attack, Perks and Item Mods. Apart from the Super Melee Attack, both Perks and Item Mods will grant you added bonuses such as making your medkits more efficient or allowing you to run greater distance without losing too much stamina. Super Melee Attacks are melee attacks that must be charged before you can land them for added damage. You have plenty of options here to play around as well according to your own gameplay style.

In short, Zombie Army 4: Dead Army is only easy if you use a custom build which is according to your own playstyle. Your perks, item mods, Super Melee Attack, and weapons all combine to form your build which will help you take down zombie hordes easily. So if you prefer staying your ground while fighting or moving around the area easily and taking down zombies from a close range, make your own custom build and continue upgrading it to make it the ultimate zombie-slaying build.

Stick to Your Build

Continuing from the previous tip of having your own custom builds, another important tip for you is to stick to your custom build. While Zombie Army 4: Dead Army offers plenty of choices to play around, your ultimate build should be 1 and you must focus on it and upgrade it to the max. You can have different builds for different sessions but if you really want to have the ultimate supremacy in the game, you must have one build and continue to upgrade chosen perks, weapons and become the ultimate badass.

You will also start noticing the difference in your gameplay when you continue to play with the same build for a longer period of time. You will be more comfortable with the weapons and will be able to fully utilize the bonuses of the perks and item mods because they will continue to level up and unlock additional bonuses for you as well. As you level up, you will unlock better perks, more perk slots, and many other bonuses along the way.

Always Be Ready to Improvise

Zombie Army 4: Dead Army is a brutal zombie horde game and it will take it easy on you. One second you will be feeling really proud of yourself as you slay one zombie after another, the other second the game will completely overwhelm you with zombies and you will be running around fanatically with your life hanging on a thread. Although there is plenty of ammo and supplies to go around, you must be ready to improvise at all times.

If you run out of ammo and find a weapon on the ground, be quick to pick it up and use every last bit of ammo left in it. Out of ammo again, slide and stomp downed zombies. Stomping is a vital combat mechanic in the game and will save your life at times when you least expect to be saved. Always stomp on grounded enemies because it will help you conserve ammo as well for more formidable zombies running around the map.

Prioritize ‘Special Zombies’

Zombie Army 4: Dead War is a zombie shooter game and there is no shortage of zombies naturally in the game. As you progress in the main story and get access to later missions, you will continue to come across more and more varied types of zombies which are not only quite cool to look at but they will make your life hell in the game. They are different from the normal zombies so we will classify them all as ‘special zombies’. These special zombies come in various shapes and sizes and they should be your priority if they cross paths with you.

Some of these zombies will shoot you from a distance, some will make normal zombies more enrages while some will eventually be carrying exceptionally powerful weapons and will be extremely tough to take down. When you come across these zombies, you must try to get rid of them as soon as possible and then focus on the normal zombies afterward. The normal horde comes in great numbers so if you continue mowing them down, these special zombies will easily pick you off and you will eventually end up dead. Always kill the special ones first.

Always Search for Special Ordinance Crates

As you explore different maps, you will often find special large crates hiding around here and there. Once you open these crates, you will find powerful weapons or powerful weapon attachments for your current weapons. These weapons and weapon attachments are extremely helpful in taking down zombie hordes so you should always be on the lookout for them. They are not that easy to miss once they are in your view however in later stages, you will find most of them hidden away from the normal paths so you will be required to explore the maps thoroughly to find them.

Stomp Dead Zombies for Supplies

Supply crates and boxes are not the only sources of supplies in Zombie Army 4: Dead War. As you mow down hordes and hordes of zombies, you will often find some dead zombies with a special icon on them. Depending on what type of supplies they have, the icon could be on medkits or ammo. Once you find such bodies, press L1 to stomp their bodies and crush them to reveal the hidden supplies inside them. These bodies are exceptionally useful in ensuring that you don’t run out ammo.

Unlock Weapon Assists and Use Them to Your Advantage

While playing, there are three advanced combat mechanics that you must charge with certain tasks before you are able to use them. These tasks are Overkill Weapon Assist, Weapon Focus Weapon Assist, and Brain Buster Weapon Assist. You can unlock Overkill Weapon Assist with 10 Rifle Kills in a row. Once it is charged, you can press L2 and then R1 to activate it. Once activated, you will deal massive damage to enemies which reach out to more zombies.

To unlock Weapon Focus Weapon Assist, you must get 10 kills with a secondary weapon in a row. Once charged, you can press L2 and then R1 to activate it. Once activated, you will see that the time has slowed down around you giving you more time to kill zombies around you. To unlock Brain Buster Weapon Assist, you must get 10 Pistol Kills in a row. To activate, press L2 and then R1. Once activated, you can aim with L2 to mark enemies and then later press R2 to kill marked zombies with a headshot.

Always Keep Multiple Types of Grenades With You

Zombie Army 4: Dead Army allows you to equip and use a variety of grenades in the game in your fight against the horde. Apart from the normal frag grenades, you will also find electrical, incendiary and most importantly Tellar Grenades. Tellar Grenades can be laid down on the ground and set up traps for the zombies. Once laid down, they explore when zombies come close to them. Although you can fill your grenade slots with the same type of grenades, it actually helps if you keep two different types of grenades handy with you at all types because they will increase your tactical advantage in various situations in the game.

Random Tips and Tricks

  • If you are surrounded by zombies, always switch to the secondary weapon or ultimately your pistol instead of reloading your gun.
  • Never run into a small room during a horde fight. You will get surrounded very easily and will end up losing all your health even if you manage to kill the zombies. Smaller rooms will also make it difficult to use grenades to your advantage because you will end damaging or even killing your own self with your own grenade.
  • During mini-boss fights, always be on the run. The minibosses tend to run into you suddenly and they deal exceptional amounts of melee damage. Also, their high powered weapons are more deadly at close range so you should always try to maintain a decent distance from them and shoot them on their heads.
  • Always try to land headshots. 1 bullet will instantly kill a zombie and sometimes you will end up chaining kills as well as bullets travel through the bodies.
  • Use Aim-assist if you find manual aiming too hard consoles. The aim assist is really great in the game and will allow you to easily land combos of headshots.
  • Melees should be your last resort. Both charged melee and Super Melee Attack deal massive amounts of damage to zombies and since there is no dodge in the game, if a zombie creeps up right up to your face, instantly use your melee attacks before it can damage you.
  • Focus on chapter goals as well, Sometimes, the horde completely overwhelms you and you forget that you had to collect some things to unlock doors or progress to the next area which causes you to run out of ammo and eventually die. Always try to complete goals while mowing down zombies that come in your way. You do not have to kill all the zombies in the game. Sometimes it is best to simply run and gun to complete objectives and progress to the safe house.
