In Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Samus, your character, can unlock three different elemental attacks, and the Thunder Shot is the final one players receive, and it plays a very important role late in the game. This ability is required to break Thunder Blockers and activate certain inactive devices and objects found throughout the world. Because of this, the Thunder Shot is necessary for finishing the main story. Naturally, you can expect story spoilers in this guide. In this Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Thunder Shot Guide, we will show you how you can unlock this specific elemental shot and its usage.
How to Unlock Thunder Shot in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond
The Thunder Shot is not unlocked directly. Instead, you must first locate and collect the Thunder Chip, which is later converted into the ability. Before searching for the Thunder Chip, a few important steps must be completed.
To access the Thunder Chip, players must already have the following:
- Vi-O-La IC Mode: unlocked in Volt Forge after defeating Keratos in the Ice Belt
- Psychic Boost Ball, which is required to unlock Vi-O-La IC Mode
- Access to Flare Pool, which is reached by using Vi-O-La IC Mode to cross a lava pool
- Psychic Grapple: earned after progressing through Flare Pool and defeating Phenoros
These abilities are all required to reach the area where the Thunder Chip is hidden.
Where to Find the Thunder Chip
Once Psychic Grapple is unlocked, you should then return to Volt Forge. From there, head down through Tower 1 until reaching an area called the Collapsed Catwalk. On the map, this location appears as unexplored, making it easy to identify.
Use the Psychic Grapple to cross the broken platform and continue forward. The path leads to a room filled with Lamorn power cells. On the west side of this room, there is a damaged power cell. Scan the broken cover, then use the Grapple Lasso to pull it away. This reveals the Thunder Chip, which can then be collected. Players should be ready for a boss fight that takes place in this same room.
Turning the Thunder Chip into Thunder Shot
After obtaining the Thunder Chip, you must travel back to Fury Green, where you will meet Myles. Myles will convert the chip into the Thunder Shot. This process works the same way as it did for Ice Shot and Fire Shot, so it should feel familiar.
Once the upgrade is complete, the Thunder Shot is automatically assigned to the d-pad, allowing it to be used immediately.
A nearby elemental lock puzzle in Fury Green, located just a few rooms away from Myles, is a perfect place to try out the Thunder Shot for the first time. This helps players get comfortable with the ability before using it in more dangerous areas.
