Why GTA Vice City is the best from the franchise? When GTA 3 revolutionized gaming and made the open-world genre a commercial hit that would always become a staple of modern-day gaming, they would simply not let it end as a one-hit-wonder. After GTA 3 came GTA Vice City which further improved upon the formula and made the franchise even better by adding tons of new mechanics and never-before-seen gameplay elements into the mix.
80’s = Heaven
They continued GTA’s reign by releasing GTA Vice City as a love letter to the beloved 1980s. The game was accurate, though sometimes a tongue-in-cheek representation of the 80s. The initial release of the game especially had Micheal Jackson’s songs along with other recognizable hit songs of the 80s.
The in-game radio commercials parodied the typical commercials of the 80s. The setting of Vice City was obviously based off Miami and there was a pinkish hue of neon in many parts of town. The story of the game is a great part of Vice City.
An Amped Up Martin Scorsese Movie?
with the plot seeing our protagonist Tommy Vercetti released from prison and being flown to Vice City to oversee a drug deal which eventually goes wrong in typical Scarface fashion.
This sets off Tommy’s takeover of the coastal paradise where corruption is scattered almost everywhere and our player character ascends to become the undisputed kingpin of Vice City, taking over one business at a time all amid a whirlwind of cocaine.
It Was Just Looting and Shooting
That was not all, but there were a decent amount of side quests for a game that is almost 20 years old now. Tired of being the crime lord of Vice City? Why not try delivering pizza?
You are already bad, but now you want to be good? “Borrow” a cop car from a hardworking officer of the law and bring justice to villains! Especially back then there was no end to the number of things that you could partake in.
Hollywood’s Finest
The game had simply taken the exceptional formula of GTA 3 and greatly improved upon it. Perhaps one of the biggest achievements of the game was giving us a fully voiced protagonist played by none other than Ray Liotta of Goodfella’s fame.
A Timeless Classic
This was a great improvement over GTA 3’s mute. The real question is, has the game aged well? Depends on who you ask, many would say it has aged like a fine wine, others would claim that it is best left as a thing of the past.
The controls of the game take a lot of time to get accustomed to since this is a 2002 game we are talking about, there is absolutely no regenerating health and vehicles explode when they are flipped.
Oh, and a running gag about Vice City’s kingpin is that he can’t swim. Maybe Tommy should have considered taking swimming classes, all paid for with his drug money? Who can forget the RC helicopter mission? That mission was a total disaster, but a fun kind of a disaster.
These are the top points that make GTA Vice City a landmark game that is a must-have for every gamer’s collection and explain the reason why the game is, and will always be the stuff of legends.
