Amnesia: The Dark Descent is now Open Source Thanks to Frictional Games

Amnesia The Dark Descent Open Source

Frictional Games, the developer behind the horror titles Amnesia and SOMA, has announced that Amnesia: The Dark Descent is now available as Open Source. The decision comes from the developer on the 10th Anniversary of Amnesia: The Dark Descent. The game was released 10 years ago in 2010 and it set a new bar for psychological horror titles.

With the new decision, both Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs will be available for everyone to use and start creating their own games. The code comes with the complete game code for both titles. It will also contain the editor code however all rights are still owned by Frictional Games for the code and both the titles. The code will release under GPL v3. You can download the code from the links provided below.

Thomas Grip, creative director at Frictional Games detailed:

Modding has been a huge part of Amnesia. For instance, over the years The Dark Descent has accumulated over a thousand mods and addons on ModDB. This flood of user content has been amazing to see, and we are extremely grateful for the whole community. It is time we give something back!

With the source code now available to everyone, both games will still remain online for players to purchase on online stores. Nothing will change regarding both games and developers can create their own games using the code provided as long as they adhere to the GPL3 license guidelines. Frictional Games is currently working on the sequel to Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Amnesia: Rebirth which is slated for a release next month. Amnesia: Rebirth will feature a completely new take on the psychological horror franchise while retaining true to the original game’s core. The game picks up the story where the first game ends and introduces a brand new protagonist to the game Tasi Trianon.
