Dead Cells was just released back in May of this year, and was welcomed with success with many positive reviews. Despite its success, Dead Cells developer Motion Twin is not interested in making a sequel.
Typical to the trend of successful games, a sequel can always be predicted, if not in the near future. In the case of Dead Cells however, this may not be the case. Speaking to Game Informer, game designer Sebastien Benard has said that its best if the studio does not dwell on its success:
In terms of a sequel, we know for sure it’s not a good idea to dwell on your success. If you create a big hit, it’s best to use this energy to make something different. I don’t think we’ll make a Dead Cells 2. We’re more open to creating more content and opening the game up more to the community. If we did make a Dead Cells 2, it’s because we really need the money (laughs). We don’t want to stick to the same thing though, so I think if we did come back it would be something quite different, not a platformer or roguelike along these lines.
Bernard also added that if the developer out any work into Dead Cells, it would be to create more content and to open up the game to the community. this also suggests that Motion Twin will not be making a similar game like Dead Cells as Bernard said that the Developers’ next game will not be a platformer or a rogue-like.
The focus seems to be to add some stuff to the original game to make the players stick around a little longer, such as the custom game mode that was just released in its latest update for free.
Dead Cells is arguably one of the best indie games of 2019, and having wont the Indie and Developer award at The Game Awards, 2018 last month.
Do you think the developers will rethink this plan sometime in the future to work on a Dead Cells Sequel? Post your comments below.
