Halloween is the time of year when everyone is getting ready for spooks and looks for unique horror experiences everywhere. This is the very same reason why most horror video game developers prefer to release their horror games close to Halloween. Nothing gives you one of the most extreme horror experiences other than a horror game and this year is no different.
With Halloween just a day away, we have gone back to 2019 and collected the best horror games that you have to play this Halloween if you looking forward to scaring the living crap out of yourself. If you are not afraid of the dark and want to make your Halloween extra special, the following titles are all new to this year and will absolutely fill your appetite for spooks and chills.
6. Moons of Madness
Moons of Madness is the most recent release on this list and it is absolutely brilliant. The game is set on Mars and it combines Lovecraftian horror mechanics to develop a truly unique horror experience that we’ve ever experienced in a video game. Moons of Madness puts you in shoes of Shane Newehart who is a technician aboard the Invictus research outpost.
Everything seems to be going along well until you start seeing visions and must cope with the horrors that the game throws at you. The game features excellent gameplay mechanics with brilliant puzzle solving and some of the scariest horror sequences that we’ve ever seen in a video game. All of this combined makes a solid horror experience perfect for you to play this Halloween.
5. Blair Witch
Blair Witch was released back in August 2019 and it is also an excellent horror title for this year. The game is inspired by the cinematic lore of Blair Witch and offers a brand new story-driven psychological horror experience. The game is set in 1996 when a young boy disappears in the Black Hills Forest near Burkittsville, Maryland.
You play as Ellis, a former police officer with a troubled past, who must find the boy along with his trusty companion. You explore haunted woods and look for any clues that could help you in finding out the boy but as soon as you step in the woods, you have to come face to face with a mysterious force that haunts it. You will need to ensure that you maintain your sanity if you want to continue in this amazing horror title. There’s a special up to 33% off the game deal running as well for Halloween.
4. Daymare: 1998
If you prefer the classic 1990s horror titles, then Invader Studios has the perfect title for you. Daymare: 1998 was released back in September 2019 and it is one of the best horror titles released this year. Daymare: 1998 started its life as an unofficial Resident Evil 2 Reboot but it was later shut down by Capcom however the developers continued working under a new name for the project and thus Daymare: 1998 was born and it is brilliant.
Daymare: 1998 is a third-person shooter that combines the classic combo of shooting, puzzle-solving and survival mechanics all into a single title. The game features 3 unique characters to play with and their story is connected with each other. The game features linear levels with a little bit of exploration here and there. The puzzles are a real mind-bender as well so you will be spending quite a decent time here killing zombies and solving puzzles to move on.
3. The Sinking City
The Sinking City is one of my personal favorites this year. Frogwares has really done an excellent job with The Sinking City. The Sinking City is basically an investigation game where you play as Charles Reed who has arrived in the city of Oakmont, Massachusetts to find out the reason behind his terrible visions. Upon his arrival, he finds out that the city has been overcome by a supernatural flood and the citizens of the city are experiencing similar strange visions.
Reed quickly settles in and begins in the investigation where he is tangled with the local family feud and finds himself stuck in the middle of it. He must try to maintain his sanity as the supernatural forces take over his mind slowly and try to solve the mystery behind the supernatural flood before he loses his mind to it. The game features open-world gameplay with deep lore and plenty of stuff to do in it.
2. The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan
Another horror title which was released in August 2019 and it is probably the most complex horror game on this list. Man of Medan is the first video game in Supermassive Games’ The Dark Pictures Anthology and it offers tons of replay value. The game plays out according to your decisions and a lot of conversation selections will completely alter how your story plays out for you.
This massive dialogue-based choice selection leads to different endings for you to find. This is not all. Man of Medan also comes with numerous play modes such as the Movie Night Mode which completely change how you play the game which is yet another reason for you to dive back in the game, again and again, to try out the sheer brilliance of this horror masterpiece. If you prefer a choice-led story and want to experience something that will absolutely make you turn your lights back on, Man of Medan is your game to play this Halloween.
1. Resident Evil 2 Remake
2019 started off pretty strong when Capcom released Resident Evil 2 Remake in January 2019 and this list would be incomplete if we don’t add this brilliant nostalgic throwback in our list. Resident Evil 2 Remake is the answer to how a remake should be made. The game is set in Raccoon City and follows the journey of rookie police officer Leon Kennedy and college student Claire Redfield who must fight the outbreak within Raccoon City. The Remake features every single aspect of the original 1998 release, makes it better and presents it in the best way possible.
The Remake features a brand new design for all zombies which make them look absolutely terrifying along with a new immersive camera that captures all the action so that you don’t miss a single tooth that they sink in your flesh. Everything ranging from the characters, environments and the story has been rebuilt from the ground up to deliver a solid Resident Evil 2 experience and we love it.
