Intel gave a demo of an upcoming 28-core CPU that could run at 5 GHz at Computex 2018. While it turned out that the chip was nothing new and actually and existing chip that was overclocked to 5 GHz using an industrial chiller Intel has now released the 28 Core Intel Xeon W-3175X.
Intel claimed to have “forgot” to mention that the chip was overclocked and when the press realized what was going on the company took the hardware off the floor in a hurry. This was indeed nothing more than a PR stunt that backfired and the company got a lot of bad rep for the stunt.
The 28 Core Intel Xeon W-3175X is an actual product and keeping in mind the high-end nature of the processor it is clear that this is not a gaming CPU. It is based on the 14nm+ process and comes with 28 cores and 56 threads. Other than that the chip can also support 6 channel memory. It supports DDR4-2666 and is compatible with up to 512GB RAM.
Out of the box, the base clock is 3.1 GHz and can boost to 4.3 GHz. This is not as high as 5 GHz but the chip can be overclocked and Intel has partnered with Asetek to introduce an all-in-one liquid cooler that could help you get close to that 5 GHz promise. You can check out the Asetek 690LX-PN liquid cooler below:
The main features of the Asetek 690LX-PN liquid cooler are as follows:
- Approved for Intel® Xeon® W-3175X processor
- Supports overclocked CPUs up to 500W
- Three 120mm fans pre-mounted for simple installation
- Highly efficient copper radiator
- 2-year warranty
While this chip does have a TDP of 255W at stock reports claim that overclocking the chip can take it up to 510W. That is a lot of power and I am sure that the chip is going to dissipate a lot of heat as well. Only time will tell whether or not the 28 Core Intel Xeon W-3175X can actually hit 5 GHz but keeping in mind that the chip uses an older architecture and that there are 28 cores, I would not be surprised if it could not reach that promised frequency.
One of two motherboards that support this new processor is the Asus Dominus Extreme. We already saw this motherboard at Computex 2018 but now it has been officially released. While the Intel Xeon W-3175X is not for gamers the Asus Dominus Extreme still has good looks and offers RGB lighting which is odd keeping in mind that this motherboard is not going to be visible in most cases. You can check out the motherboard below:
Intel is also going to enter into the discrete graphics market in 2020. We know that Intel has been having issues with the 10nm process and it has been delayed time and time again. AMD on the other hand now has a new deal with GlobalFoundries which allows it to pick any foundry for 7nm and 5nm nodes. It will be interesting to see how Intel is going to compete with AMD on the CPU side and Nvidia on the graphics side at the same time.
Let us know what you think about the 28 Core Intel Xeon W-3175X CPU and whether or not you think this is everything that Intel promised at Computex 2018.
