Combat Guide – Steamworld Quest
Our Steamworld Quest Combat Guide details everything that you need to know about combat in Steamworld Quest.
Understanding the Basics
Combat in Steamworld Quest is strictly based on cards and you will be using a wide variety of cards to deal damage to your enemies in a variety of ways. It is important that you understand the type of cards and how to use them effectively in the game so that you can easily win all battles in the game.
While you are playing Steamworld Quest, you will have three characters active in your team at all times. Every time you are in a battle, these three characters will be playing by default. You must play the main story to unlock these characters. Each character will bring with it eight cards in the deck.
When a battle begins, six random cards will be drawn at the start of each turn from this deck. To complete each turn, you must play three cards from these six cards. On the other hand, your opponent will play one card per character. This will change if the opponent is a boss or a similarly high-powered character.
You can replace two cards in your deck before the start of every turn in the game. Make sure that you go through your cards at the start of each turn and make sure that you have some decent cards for your next turn as well. Hence you must always look at your deck before playing your turn and switch some cards if you want to.
Understanding Card Types
Your deck will have three different types of cards to play. The first one is the Strike Card. Strike Cards are basic attack cards which you will use in the game to attack the enemy characters in each turn. The second one is the Upgrade card. These Upgrade Cards will add buffs to your normal cards or buff up stats of your allies or characters.
Stats could be attack power, adding shields to allies or increase the strength of your characters. The third one is a Skill Card. Skill Cards range from Special Attacks to special uses such as healing allies or such. Skill Cards are the only cards which require Steam Pressure in Steamworld Quest. These are the three main types of cards in Steamworld Quest that you should know about.
Understanding Steam Pressure
You must know that Skill Cards in Steamworld Quest require Steam Pressure. Steam Pressure is a unique mechanic in Steamworld Quest which must be understood quickly because effective use of Steam Pressure will ensure that you win your battles against your enemies easily. As you play Attack or Upgrade Cards in the turn, you will generate Steam Pressure points.
Each card played in the turn will generate 1 Steam Pressure Point. You will need to check the Steam Pressure Points requirement for any Skill card that you want to play in the turn. Note the number of Steam Pressure Points and play that exact number of Attack or Upgrade Cards before and then choose the Skill Card that requires the Steam Pressure Points.
This will ensure that the Attack or Upgrade Cards played before the Skill Card generate the required number of Steam Pressure Points before the Skill Card is actually played. If you have a Skill Card and you want to play it first without any Steam Pressure Points, the card will simply not play. Hence the Skill cards will only play if you have enough Steam Pressure Points in your turn. You can stack Steam Pressure Points over multiple turns to play more powerful Skill Cards.
Using Combos
Steamworld Quest comes with a super combo system. In a turn, if you play three cards with the same character, it will create it a three-card combo which will give you access to the current character’s combo card. The fourth card will be chosen automatically by the game and it will be the fourth card in your turn. Normally you can play only three cards in one turn.
Combo Cards are linked to the weapons held by your characters. Progress in the main story and you will unlock more and more weapons to purchase from the merchant. Equip different weapons and you will have a different combo card for use every time. Choose the best one that suits your gameplay style.
Some cards will also have a character’s head on them which show that these cards will allow you to perform inter-character combos which are much stronger as compared to normal combos. While building your team and deck, make sure that you choose the best available cards that offer multi-character combos.
Understanding Enemy Types
In Steamworld Quest, you will encounter a large number of different enemies in battles. It is important that you know about your enemy’s weaknesses and strengths before you make your move. Certain cards in Steamworld Quest will deal elemental damage to enemies and if the enemy is weak against that certain type of elemental damage, they will get increased damage.
To know more details about your enemies, you can pause the game and choose the blue magnifying glass icon. This will take you to the next screen where you will be able to see detailed information on all the enemies in the battle. Here, you can see which cards will be most effective the enemies currently on the field. Always use this feature to gain an advantage over the opposition.
Upgrading Gear
Steamworld Quest features an in-game merchant which will allow you to craft more and better cards. You can also buy new cards from the merchant if you have enough resources for them. You can also upgrade your existing cards to make them more powerful. Keep playing the game and you will collect resources which are required for crafting and upgrading your cards and gear at the merchant.
Recover Your Characters
If one of your characters is down while playing the game, you will have the option to recover them by using different recovery items. However, you must know that these recovery items act as cards and they will consume one card slot for the turn in which you revive your characters. You can recover more than one characters in a single turn as well but keep in mind that more revival items you use in a turn; fewer attack cards you can use in the same turn.
