Beginner’s Guide – Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu/Eevee

Our Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu/Eevee Beginner’s Guide details all basic mechanics of the game and lists some tips and tricks that will help you begin your Pokémon journey in Kanto region.

Aim for the Original Starters

The three starter Pokémon in the game are the same as of any other Pokémon game. You can get Bulbasaur, Squirtle and Charmander from different NPCs spread around the Kanto region if you fulfil their requirements. Although these three starters are available in the wild, you can get more powerful and better variants by these NPCs.

For Bulbasaur, head to Cerulean City after catching 30 Pokémon, for Charmander catch 50 Pokémon and head to Route 24 whereas you can get Squirtle in Vermillion City after catching 60 Pokémon. These three original starters will be much better than those found in the wild so we recommend that you get these as soon as you meet the requirements.

Catch Everything You See

Pokémon: Let’s Go is all about capturing all Pokémon in the game and you will encounter 153 different Pokémon in the game including the exclusive Meltan and its evolved form. Catch as many Pokémon in the game as you can as you encounter them in the game.

Capturing fresh Pokémon should be your priority, which are not registered in your Pokedex, however do not miss the ones already added to your Pokedex because they will add a Catch Combo. Catch Combos are achieved when you catch a same species of Pokémon in order.

They are added to the experience your team gets and help in levelling up your team much easily. Catch Combos not only allow you to build up experience easily but they also allow you to catch rare Pokémon which are not easily found. Capturing the same Pokémon allows you to have a multitude of different Pokémon of the same species with different stats which allow you to choose the best one among them.

You might not find the best one right at the start so you can opt for capturing more so that you can easily choose to keep the best one and send the remaining ones to Professor Oak to get some candy. Creating and maintaining high levels of Catch Combos will further increase the chances of encountering a rare Pokémon such as Shiny Pokémon or Pokémon with much higher stats.

Interact with all NPCs

The region of Kanto is full of people and you can interact with almost every one of them. Go to an NPC whenever you see one and speak with them to talk with them. They will give you some really handy pointers, hints and sometimes if you are lucky, even Pokémon. Some NPCs will also trade Pokémon with you in the game.

There are some special versions of Pokémon in the game such as the super-tall Exeggutor or the Alolan form of some Pokémon are only obtained through trading with such NPCs. You might even get a special Pokémon exclusive to another version of the game by speaking with a certain NPC in the game. Therefore, we recommend that you interact with all NPCs in the game.

Bond with your Starter

You will start the game with either Pikachu or Eevee depending on the game version you purchased. They will always stick to your side and they will ride on your shoulder throughout the journey. You can have additional activities with these starters such as petting them or giving them snacks such as berries.

Bonding with your starter makes them happier and unlocks special actions for use in battles. Unhappy starters will not perform their best during battles and no special moves will be available for you to use. If you own the PokeBall Plus, you can even take your starter with you for a walk which is the perfect way to increase bonding with them.

Use the Judge Function

Judge function is a very useful feature in Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu/Eevee as it will show you all base stats of the Pokémon. It greatly helps you pick the best Pokémon for you team. There are three different categories of Pokémon in the game which are Okay, Good and Amazing. Having Amazing Pokémon in your team should be your goal and this is only possible through Judge function.

However, this function is not available right from the start. You will need to unlock this function first. To do so, all you need to do is catch 30 different species of the Pokémon and register them in your Pokedex. Once done, head to the building connecting Route 11 and Route 12 and speak with Professor Oak’s assistant sitting there.

He will unlock the Judge feature for your Pokémon Box and hence you will be able to see the base stats of all captured Pokémon with it easily. This will allow you to decide the best Pokémon to keep on your team and send the remaining ones to Professor Oak in exchange for some candy.

Have a Healthy Stock of PokeBalls

You will need a big amount of PokeBalls in the game because every time you try to capture a Pokémon, a PokeBall will be consumed whether the Pokémon was captured or not. So this naturally calls for a large amount of PokeBalls to use in the game. You will get more PokeBalls as you capture Pokémon but you also get more from PokeMart if you run out of them.

Make sure that always have PokeBalls with you because you never know when you find a super rare Pokémon and you run out of PokeBalls while trying to capture it. Shiny and other rare Pokémon will not be as easy to catch as normal and weak Pokémon so you will run out of PokeBalls quickly if you are not careful.

Take Care of Your Pokémon

Your Pokémon are your best friends in the game and more you take care of them, more they will be loyal to you. As you take them to battles, they will eventually get exhausted and tired. You can use plenty of items to make them feel good or simply take them to your nearest Pokémon Center to get them some good treatment by Nurse Joy.

You can also play with your Pokémon which increases your bonding and loyalty with them. Happy and healthy Pokémon will perform better in battles rather than tired or weak Pokémon. Hence it is important that you take good care of the Pokémon in your team.

Once you have beaten the main story of the game, find these Master Trainers and defeat them in battles to earn the title of Master Trainer for each Pokémon found in the game.
