Nintendo has announced the very first Direct of 2026 featuring The Super Mario Galaxy Movie; however, it will not feature any video game announcements. Nintendo has been hosting Direct events ever since it announced it would not participate in E3 events. These presentations are mostly for announcing new games, new features of a video game, or even its own hardware, like Nintendo Switch 2. Last year, Nintendo changed it a bit when it held the very first direct for its upcoming movie.
Ever since the fall of E3, the big three hardware companies have been hosting their own Directs or presentations, like Xbox’s recent Developer_Direct for Forza Horizon 6, Fable, and Beast of Reincarnation. PlayStation holds its own State of Play video programs for all announcements. E3 is no longer taking place, and its place has been taken by video game events, livestreams, and shows that span over the same June window, but they are focused on specific titles, genres, or developers rather than the whole industry.

The latest Nintendo Direct will give us an exclusive look at the upcoming The Super Mario Galaxy Movie on January 25, 2026, at 6 AM PT. Nintendo has especially mentioned that this stream will not include any sort of game information. There is no time limit detailed in the Tweet, but an average Direct takes around 30-40 minutes to complete. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is Nintendo’s upcoming movie created in collaboration with Illumination.
The movie has an impressive lineup of cast with Chris Patt playing Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy playing Princess Peach, and Jack Black playing Bowser. Additional cast includes Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad. Many of these actors are resuming these roles from 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. This time around, Mario and the gang will be chasing after Bowser Jr., who is on a mission to free his father, Bowser, from a tiny prison. The gang will traverse a colourful world as they try to stop Bowser Jr. before he succeeds in his mission.
This is the second Direct that Nintendo will be hosting for the movie. The last direct was held back in November 2025, and it shared some initial details about the movie, its cast, and its plot. This time around, we can expect additional details and potentially a release date as well. 2026 is looking strong for video games, and it can become even stronger for gamers if this movie is released this year.
