I will be honest here. I did not play Granblue Fantasy: Relink when it launched back in 2024. Still, when I received the review code for its expansion Endless Ragnarok, I decided to complete the entire base game and its DLC before I wrote my review of the expansion. This was probably one of the best decisions I ever made. While Granblue Fantasy: Relink might be a little different when compared with other JRPGs, it stands proud with its own unique identity. Experiencing both the base game and Endless Ragnarok back-to-back also gave me a unique perspective on how well the expansion builds upon the original experience, and where it falls short. This is our review of Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok on PC via Steam, in which we fight brutal new bosses, experiment with six new playable characters, and see whether this expansion lives up to the incredibly high bar set by the base game.
Endless Ragnarok begins right where the base game ends. After defeating the final boss of the game and saving Lyria, you are introduced to a brand-new threat called Ragnalia. These are gigantic creatures even more powerful than the Primal Beasts of the base game, and they have been sighted in the Sky Realm. This is where the name of the expansion also comes from because their arrival marks the arrival of Ragnarok. The narrative follows the same cutscene and dialogue sequences as in the base game; however, there are far fewer cutscenes this time around, which is a letdown. I greatly enjoyed the cutscenes of the base game. The core gameplay is pretty much the same as well, where you land on islands, fight enemies, defeat a boss, and move on to the next.
Endless Ragnarok takes a different approach. Rather than trying to recreate that same adventure, the expansion is aimed mostly at players who have already mastered Relink’s combat and are hungry for tougher challenges. It expands the roster, introduces powerful new bosses, and offers plenty of reasons to keep grinding for better gear. However, its biggest weakness is also what separates it from the base game. The narrative takes a back seat, making this feel less like a new chapter in Gran and the crew’s journey and more like an endgame-focused content pack. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it does mean Endless Ragnarok won’t leave the same lasting impression as the original adventure.
The expansion adds six new characters to the roster, and you must unlock them through Character Cards, similar to the base game. Each one brings a unique combat style that immediately changes how battles unfold, and that’s exactly where Endless Ragnarok shines. One of Relink’s greatest strengths has always been its character design. There are some familiar faces here as well, such as Gallanza, who was originally an enemy in the base game. Every fighter feels distinct instead of being another variation of an existing moveset, and that philosophy continues here. Learning the timing, combos, and abilities of each newcomer is incredibly rewarding, especially if you’ve already spent dozens of hours mastering the original roster.
Rather than simply adding stronger attacks, the expansion encourages experimentation. Switching between characters genuinely changes your approach to encounters, making even familiar battles feel fresh again. Combined with additional progression systems and new equipment to chase, there’s enough content here to keep dedicated players invested long after the credits roll. The addition of the brand-new Conflux mode is also a big win for players who wanted a much more streamlined method of farming resources and unlocking new characters.
The Conflux is a roguelite mode where you can jump into and farm for rare resources at any time you want. In this mode, you are presented with challenge rooms, but the challenges could be different every time. These challenges range from platforming to combat challenges, and once you complete a room, you move to the next room, which presents another challenge. Complete the whole run, and you will get a good amount of resources. The best part is that you can play this mode any time you want after unlocking it. Each run takes around 30 minutes to complete, so it is not that long as well.
If there’s one thing Endless Ragnarok understands, it’s why so many players stuck with Relink after finishing the campaign. The expansion leans heavily into challenging boss encounters, demanding teamwork, proper builds, and a solid understanding of combat mechanics. These fights are larger, tougher, and often more mechanically involved than many of those found in the base game. Victory rarely comes from button mashing alone. Instead, players need to dodge carefully, manage cooldowns, and coordinate Link Attacks and Skybound Arts effectively.
For players who enjoy pushing builds to their limits, this is exactly the kind of endgame content Relink needed. The downside is that this focus comes at the expense of pacing. Instead of balancing story moments with exploration and combat, Endless Ragnarok quickly moves from one major encounter to the next. While the action remains consistently exciting, the experience can occasionally feel like a series of challenges rather than a complete RPG adventure.
This is where Endless Ragnarok falls short of the standard set by the original game. Granblue Fantasy: Relink succeeded because its combat had an emotional backbone. The crew’s journey, character interactions, and cinematic storytelling gave players a reason to care beyond collecting stronger weapons. The expansion doesn’t capture that same magic. It has its moments, but they are few and far between.
There are still enjoyable moments and familiar faces, but the story is relatively brief and primarily exists to connect players to the next battle. It lacks the memorable character development and emotional weight that made the original campaign so compelling. Players hoping for another substantial narrative adventure may find themselves disappointed. Those looking for more combat, however, will likely be satisfied.
Since the expansion runs inside the base game, the performance is the same as that of the base game. The expansion ran smoothly throughout my playtime on Steam with stable performance, responsive controls, and no major technical issues. Visually, it maintains the same stunning anime-inspired art direction, detailed environments, and spectacular visual effects that made Relink one of the best-looking action RPGs in recent years. Even during the most chaotic boss encounters, performance remained consistently solid.

Final Verdict:
Endless Ragnarok doesn’t try to reinvent Granblue Fantasy: Relink. Instead, it expands on what the base game does best: its exceptional combat. The six new playable characters are a joy to use, and the challenging boss encounters provide plenty of rewarding endgame content for veteran players. However, the expansion’s biggest drawback is its limited story, which lacks the emotional depth and memorable moments that made the original adventure so compelling. While it doesn’t quite reach the same heights as the base game, Endless Ragnarok is still a worthwhile expansion for players looking for more of Relink’s outstanding action-packed gameplay.
Final Score: 8.0/10
