Stronghold: Warlords Dev Diary Video Shows Off Improved AI

Stronghold: Warlords Dev Diary

Firefly Studios has just released a new Stronghold: Warlords dev diary video, which talks about the improved AI in enemy behavior. This includes warlord control, deeper castle management, and improved combat.

In the new dev diary video, designer Stephen Richards and creator Simon Bradbury reveal the major improvements they have made to the AI behavior in the upcoming castle sim sequel Stronghold: Warlords.

To work with the new Warlords system, AI behavior has been completely revamped related to castle management, skirmish combat, and city building. Much like the archetypes of the warlords themselves – such as the Ox, Tiger, and Crane – each enemy AI will adhere to a distinct style of play over a set of predetermined behaviors.

The decisions made by computer opponents will now be made according to map layout, tactical positioning of warlords, available resources, current army composition, and their priorities at different stages of gameplay.

Lead Designer Simon Bradbury had this to say,

Suffice to say, the AI no longer cheats” said Simon Bradbury. It no longer needs a helping hand to provide the fun gameplay that a Stronghold game must provide, allowing you to disrupt their economy and pin them down. We know we’ve done our job properly when a warlord coordinates a pincer movement and players sit back thinking ‘That’s what I would have done!’

The improved AI that the team has been working on is one of the examples of community-requested improvements being made to Firefly’s next upcoming Stronghold title. The studio is continually taking feedback from payers on the game’s official Discord server.
