Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios have announced that Ryan Hurst will be playing Kratos in the upcoming God of War series. The series is being made in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions. Ryan Hurst is not new to the God of War franchise because he played Thor in PlayStation’s God of War Ragnarok, and now he is taking on the role of his video game opponent, Kratos, for the series. He was nominated for a BAFTA Award for his performance.
Kratos is the titular character of the God of War franchise. He is Spartan by birth and a god by nature. He was raised in a martial culture, where he rose to command armies in the service of his homeland until one day he made a fateful deal with Ares, the Greek God of War, and lost his soul in exchange for being victorious in battle. Kratos has kept us entertained in ten games, where he has fought and vanquished mortals, creatures, and gods alike. In the upcoming live-action series, his story will closely follow the path of the last two games, where he has to deal with something new: his ten-year-old son, Atreus.
While very few details are known of the upcoming God of War live-action series, it will follow the formula of the 2018 God of War reboot, featuring both Kratos and his son, Atreus. The father-son duo embarks on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. The journey turns into a lesson as Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus teaches his father to become a better human. The first two episodes will be directed by Emmy Award-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye (Shōgun, The Boys, Fallout).
Other prominent names on the production team include Ronal D. Moore as a showrunner, executive producer, and writer. Executive producers include Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, and Ben McGinnis serve as co-executive producers on the series.
