Microsoft Announces Acquisition of Obsidian Entertainment and InXile Entertainment at X018

X018 was an important event for Xbox as it made some really big announcements. One of the biggest announcement made during the event was that Microsoft is acquiring two separate RPG focused game studios Obsidian Entertainment and inXile Entertainment.

This was revealed at the end of X018 event when Matt Booty, head of Microsoft Studios announced that Microsoft is acquiring two big names in the RPG genre. Both of these studios Obsidian Entertainment and inXile Entertainment have made very good RPG titles in their past and their inclusion in Microsoft will only mean good things for Microsoft.

When announcing the acquisition of inXile Studios, Matt Booty said that the developer will remain autonomous and will work on their projects as they are. The studio started its journey way back in 2002. It was founded by Brian Fargo who is the main man behind the Bard’s Tale which was launched in 1980s.

inXile Studios is behind the launch of The Bard’s Tale, Torment: Tides of Numenera and Wasteland 2. The studio released The Bard’s Tale 4 is September while the next title in Wasteland franchise, Wasteland 3 is currently slated for a 2019 release. inXile will continue work on its projects as they are.

The other major acquisition announced during the X018 event was of Obsidian Entertainment. Currently the acquisition is not complete and Microsoft currently has only announced their intention of acquiring Obsidian Entertainment.

This studio is well known for its work in RPG genre as well and has many good titles such as Fallout: New Vegas, Pillars of Eternity and Alpha Protocol. Obsidian started its journey in 2003 and since have been giving us some of the best RPG experiences. Obsidian Games is currently working on an untitled RPG as well.

Both of these studios have a lot of experience in RPG genre and if used right, Microsoft will be able to give out some solid RPG titles in the future.
