Genigods: Nezha Gameplay

Developer Genigods Lab has officially unveiled Genigods: Nezha, a new single-player action RPG built in Unreal Engine 5 and targeting PlayStation 5 and PC, revealed alongside a world-first gameplay video. The project is being developed in collaboration with Sony and is currently slated for a 2028 release.

Set within ancient Chinese genesis mythology, Genigods: Nezha positions players as the Spirit Pearl, the first spark of life created by the goddess Nüwa. The narrative follows an evolving journey that begins as a celestial artifact, progresses into humanity’s earliest form, and culminates in rebirth as the legendary warrior Nezha. Along the way, players encounter mythological figures such as Yi, the sun-feller, and Yu, the flood-tamer, while forming a bond with the Heart of Sacred Water, a sentient companion tied closely to both puzzle-solving and progression.

The newly revealed gameplay highlights a combat system that blends ground and aerial encounters, allowing players to shift stances and chain abilities across vertical spaces. Battles unfold across mythic environments inspired by Chinese folklore, including encounters with colossal gods that function as climbable battlefields rather than traditional arenas. According to the studio, the game’s structure is designed to emphasize scale, movement, and adaptability rather than linear encounters.

What sets Genigods: Nezha apart is its philosophical approach to combat. Drawing inspiration from Bruce Lee’s “Be Water” philosophy and Jeet Kune Do, the game’s mechanics emphasize fluidity, reaction, and timing over rigid combos. Water-based abilities can be condensed for precise, armour-breaking strikes or unleashed broadly to control crowds, encouraging a defensive, responsive style that rewards mastery rather than brute force.

Genigods Lab brings prior experience to the project, having previously worked on successful mobile titles, including the My Hero Academia game published by Crunchyroll Games and Sony, as well as the Condor Heroes series, which has surpassed 10 million downloads worldwide. With Genigods: Nezha, the studio appears to be positioning itself for a larger-scale console and PC audience, expanding beyond its mobile roots.

While still several years away, Genigods: Nezha signals a growing interest in mythology-driven action RPGs that draw from non-Western source material. As more studios explore culturally specific mythologies through high-budget productions, the game could emerge as a notable entry in that evolving space when it arrives on PlayStation 5 and PC in 2028.
