EA Officially Reveals Battlefield 2042, Will not Feature Battle Royale or Singleplayer Campaign

Battlefield 2042

EA has officially revealed the next Battlefield title as Battlefield 2042 which will release later this year on all platforms including consoles and PC. EA and DICE describe Battlefield 2042 as ‘a groundbreaking first-person shooter set to revolutionize the modern multiplayer sandbox’. In addition, Battlefield 2042 is strictly an online title, and it will not feature any battle royale mode or a singleplayer campaign.

Battlefield 2042 is built on the technology that fully utilizes the capabilities of next-gen hardware including consoles and PCs as it drops players into a near-future, all-out war experience that includes game-changing destruction. Each match in Battlefield 2042 on PC and PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC will feature 128 players adding a massive scale to each match that you play in the game.

PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game will feature smaller maps and will be limited to 64 players each. EA also details that Battlefield 2042 will feature real-time events that reshape the battlefield and tactical combat. It will bring all-new weapons, vehicles, and gadgets to allow players the freedom to be strategic and create some of the most iconic Battlefield moments. Check out the reveal trailer below:

Key features of Battlefield 2042 include:

  • All-Out Warfare – the next generation of fan-favorite modes Conquest and Breakthrough, featuring the largest maps ever for the franchise and for the first time, up to 128 players*. Experience the intensity of All-Out Warfare in large-scale battles like never before on maps filled with dynamic weather, dangerous environmental hazards, and spectacular world events that see tornadoes rip across the map and sandstorms block out the sun.
  • Hazard Zone – an all-new, high-stakes, squad-based game-type for the Battlefield franchise that is a modern take on the multiplayer experience that is distinctly DICE but very different from All-Out Warfare’s Conquest or Breakthrough modes.
  • TO BE ANNOUNCED – the third experience, being developed by DICE LA, is another exciting new game-type for the franchise. This experience is a love letter to Battlefield fans and one that long-time players will feel right at home with.

Oskar Gabrielson, General Manager of DICE said:

Battlefield 2042 is an evolution of the franchise and embraces what our players want – the ultimate Battlefield multiplayer sandbox with intense combat and a ton of incredible, unexpected events. All of us across DICE in Stockholm, DICE LA, Criterion, and EA Gothenburg have had so much fun developing this game and now it’s time to let players jump in. What they’ll find is that we’ve built three distinct, absolutely epic experiences that we think they’ll love.

The game will feature Specialists which are a new playable soldier in the game, and they are based on the four traditional Battlefield classes. These specialists are equipped with their own unique Specialist Trait and Specialty, and they also feature fully customizable loadouts. Each Specialist will give players access to a cutting-edge arsenal of weapons, equipment, and vehicles to use in battles. The new tools give you a wealth of options to find your very own perfect combination to fit your play style and outsmart your enemies.

The setting of Battlefield 2042 is described as:

In Battlefield 2042, the world is on the brink. Shortages of food, energy, and clean water have led to dozens of failed nations, creating the greatest refugee crisis in human history. Among these Non-Patriated, or No-Pats, are families, farmers, engineers – and even soldiers. Amidst this crisis, the United States and Russia draw the world into an all-out war. No-Pat Specialists join both sides, not fighting for a flag, but for the future of the Non-Patriated in this new world.

Pre-orders are now live on all major platforms. The game will release both digitally and physically and will cost $59.99 on PS4, PC, and Xbox One and $69.99 on Xbox Series X|S and PS5. EA Play members will get a 10-hour trial starting October 10, 2021. There are three versions of Battlefield 2042 to choose from, you have the normal edition, the Gold Edition which costs $89.99 on PC and $99.99 on consoles, and then you have the Ultimate Edition which will set you back $109.99 on PC and $119.99 on consoles.

EA and DICE will reveal the official gameplay of Battlefield 2042 during the upcoming EA Play Live on July 22, 2021. The game is set to release on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on October 22, 2021.
