Publisher Modus Games and developer Secret Base have surprise-bombed everyone with the announcement of Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons. Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons is a co-op beat ‘em up featuring a tag team duo of fighters infused with roguelite elements to deliver classically informed, highly replayable Double Dragon-style brawls with a new edge. Check out the action-packed announcement trailer for Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons below before we jump into additional details:
Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons is set in New York City in the year 199X and the city has been devastated by nuclear war. The citizens are fighting for survival as riots, crime, and chaos flood the streets. Different criminal gangs have taken over the streets and they are trying for dominance over what is left of the city. Unable to tolerate the annoying gangs and unwilling to endure these conditions any longer, young Billy and Jimmy Lee have taken it upon themselves to reclaim their city and return the peace.
Since Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons is a co-op title, it gives players incredible, seamless tag-team abilities and a multitude of strategies for devastating combos, and defensive and offensive moves across the game’s 13 unique playable characters. Along with Billy and Jimmy Lee, players will be glad to see additional playable characters such as Marian, returning as a fully realized, firearm-wielding ranged fighter, and newcomer Uncle Matin, a riot shield-wielding powerhouse. You will have the ability to tag in and out as the classic Lee duo or switch it up with different characters. Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons will support two-player local co-op as well.
One unique feature that Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons will have is the dynamic mission select function. With this feature, the order in which you select your mission will affect the mission length, number of enemies, and overall difficulty. Players will have the freedom of choosing between missions within city sectors as they pursue the leaders of four deadly gangs across unique stages packed with different melee weapons, devoted gang members, and varied environments perfect for midnight brawls.
Defeating enemies in different ways will allow you to earn different in-game resources like cash and health boosts. Landing a Special KO on enemies will reward you with cash and if you perform Crown Control moves, you will be rewarded with health boosts. Crowd Control moves are special KO moves that will allow you to take out multiple enemies at the same time. The cash you earn in the game will be used for unlocking powerful upgrades for your chosen character or you can decide to save the cash for later as well. You will have freedom over the game as you can experiment with different duos, try out different alternate builds for your fighters through upgrades and change the order in which they challenge the city’s gangs.
Even if you lose in a game, you can convert your remaining cash into tokens and use them to permanently unlock extra characters and bonuses in-between sessions, making every battle useful in the long run. Before buying anything, you will need to convert your cash into tokens which can also be used to purchase a Continue if you die in a game, so it is always a bargain. The game features a refreshed pixel art visual style, it still remains faithful to the original release for both the returning heroes and villains as well as the environments. This is accompanied by a soundtrack that will keep you ready for your next fight. The game will also feature many other features such as unlockable bonuses, adjustable difficulty levels, optional permadeath, and infinite modes. It is a robust revitalization of the series’ signature side-scrolling action. Online co-op is also coming to the game later as a post-launch update.
