Cyberpunk 2077 on Xbox One will ‘Upgrade for Free’ on Xbox Series X

CD Projekt Red has announced that Cyberpunk 2077 on the Xbox One will upgrade for free when the Xbox Series X launches later this year. This means that if you buy the game on the current-gen Xbox One, you will automatically get the game for free when you purchase your Xbox Series X.

The announcement was made by the official Twitter account of the game Cyberpunk 2077, where the developer emphasizes that “gamers should never be forced to purchase the same game twice or pay for upgrades.”

The tweet comes in response to the detailed announcement made by Microsoft about its upcoming Xbox Series X’s specs, and particularly about its Smart Delivery feature. This feature allows the console to feature four generations of gaming with its backward compatibility technology.

Cyberpunk is going to release this year on 17 September for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. The free upgrade announcement would come as welcome news for fans and will allow them to freely purchase the game. This will work as a win-win situation for both the developers and the consumers. You can purchase the game without the worry of purchasing it again when on your next-gen consoles. On the other hand, this will also help the developer as it would not affect the sales when the game releases.

As far as the upgrades are concerned, CD Projekt Red did not share any details about the upgrades or how the game would be enhanced for the Xbox Series X. This is something that the developer studio might share after the release of the game in September. We also do not know when the game would be available on the new console, but we expect it sometime early in 2021.

Meanwhile, it is yet to be seen what the PlayStation 5 is going to offer. There has been no word at all about the new console that is also scheduled for a launch by the end of this year in the holiday season of 2020. With Xbox already announcing backward compatibility, it would be interesting to see how Sony responds to this announcement by both Microsoft and CD Projekt Red. It is too early to say if Cyberpunk 2077 will be available for free on the new Sony console. But for any such announcement, we first have to wait for Sony to officially reveal the PlayStation 5.

Xbox also has another announcement for one of its major titles, Halo Infinite. The studio announced that Halo Infinite will be readily available in the Xbox Game Pass for Xbox One and Xbox Series X. The flagship title will also be a product of Xbox’s new Smart Delivery, just like Cyberpunk 2077, allowing for backward compatibility on the new console.
