Sony PlayStation 4 launched November 15, 2013 first in United States and Canada. The console by the end of 2013 almost launched everywhere, including Europe, Asia, South American countries and more. Since then PlayStation 4 has been a huge success. Last year in December, the company announced that 70.6 million PlayStation 4 consoles have been sold so far.
The sheer amount of success Sony is enjoying from PlayStation 4 is so overwhelming that the company does not need to put an eye out for competition or even a successor. PlayStation 4 is doing great in terms of number of exclusives on per year basis. The console is also doing good on multi-platform games.
Just recently, CEO Sony Kenichiro Yoshida in an interview with Financial Times mentioned that:
At this point, what I can say is it’s necessary to have a next-generation hardware
This maybe the first hint from Sony boss that the company is looking forward for next generation PlayStation console. Literally, it should be called PlayStation 5 or PS5, because it will succeed PS4, but, the company did not call it PlayStation 5 in the interview.
This is too early for Sony to spill beans about their future plans. But, Kenichiro Yoshida’s words just left a sigh of relief that there will be finally a successor. Although, it can be argued that right now there, potentially, there is no need of a successor as PlayStation 4 is pushing the graphical boundaries and setting new limits with every exclusive release.
This year alone, God of War, Detroit: Become Human and Marvel’s Spider-Man have set new definition for future PlayStation 4 exclusives. Santa Monica studios did fascinating job in recreating God of War in Norse mythology. On the other hand, Insomniac games too pulled amazing job in creating alive New York City and a better story in Marvel’s Spider-Man.
