Developers Rusty Pixels and Ogre Games LTD along with publisher SpecNext LTD have announced the release date of the beloved 1980s puzzle-platformer Head Over Heels: Deluxe. Head Over Heels: Deluxe is making a comeback with an enhanced edition set to launch on PC on March 6th, followed by a Nintendo Switch release later in 2025. Originally released in 1987 for the ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, and Amstrad CPC, the game became a defining title of the era. Now, the Deluxe version is making its way to modern platforms, allowing a new generation to experience the charm and challenge that made it a cult classic.
Head Over Heels: Deluxe builds on the success of the 2024 remake created for the ZX Spectrum Next, which received excellent reviews from retro gaming outlets. Crash awarded it 94%, while Retro Gamer gave it 90%, praising its faithful recreation of the original while enhancing the gameplay experience. With the PC and Switch releases, SpecNext aims to reach a broader audience, especially those who fondly remember the game from its original run.

At the heart of the adventure are the quirky protagonists, Headus Mouthion (Head) and Footus Underium (Heels)—two characters who must work together to escape the clutches of an evil emperor. Each character has distinct abilities that you must master and combine to progress. Head can perform impressive jumps and shoot projectiles, while Heels brings speed, carrying capacity, and a distinctive waddle. Reuniting the duo unlocks even greater abilities, which are essential for navigating the game’s elaborate puzzles, hidden pathways, and eccentric enemies.
The Deluxe version modernizes the classic while staying true to its roots. You can explore over 500 intricate locations, each filled with brain-teasing puzzles and new surprises. The remake features beautifully updated isometric graphics, revised controls for smoother gameplay, and a new soundtrack by Space Fractal, capturing the game’s whimsical yet challenging spirit.
For fans of the original, classic mode offers the option to switch back to 8-bit graphics and sound, providing a nostalgic trip down memory lane. Meanwhile, modern conveniences like multiple save points, hints, and other quality-of-life improvements ensure the game remains accessible without diluting its famous difficulty. Henrique Olifiers, Director at SpecNext commented:
The Deluxe edition also boasts new content, including a completely new area, additional enemies and objects, and—perhaps most intriguingly—chickens, a quirky addition credited to team member Mike ‘Flash’ Ware. The graphics by Simon Butler add another layer of charm, breathing new life into the beloved classic.
Head Over Heels: Deluxe is slated for release on PC via Steam on March 6, 2025, with a Nintendo Switch release coming later in 2025. A confirmed release date will be announced at a later date.
