What Makes Doom An Incredible Game?

Doom

A couple of years ago Bethesda brought us Doom’s reboot and it was literally a trip to hell all because the game was good on so many levels but what are the reasons behind its success? With Doom Eternal arriving soon, we go back and dig deep in 2016’s amazing shooter reborn from the ashes. What Make’s Doom An Incredible Game? find out below in this feature.

To Hell and Back

Ah, Doom. What would Call of Duty, Battlefield or even Far Cry be without you? Doom is no doubt one of the grandfathers that had founded the first-person shooter genre and ascended to legendary value.

It belonged to the Jurassic era of information technology when 1 MB was a lot and when 500 MHz was considered a high-end processor, joining Wolfenstein and Duke Nukem. Doom proves that to be a phenomenal game, you don’t need an “America is good, Russia is bad” plot, or COD points or even a fully voiced out character to make a game great. All you need is a wide arsenal of weapons, some demons to kill and a great soundtrack to accompany you.

Doom

Blood, Gore, and Guts

So has the game aged well since it was first released on DOS? Absolutely, the DOOM videogame release in 2016 has grown up incredibly well. It runs at 1080p and 60 frames per second in terms of visuals with nearly non-existent frame rate drops.

Here’s food for thought, at some point in time, the game was used to showcase a high-end PC rig that was capable of 200 frames per second. The game does not fail to impress with its breathtaking visuals of ultra-violent demon-slaying and spilling oceans of demon blood in your wake of destruction.

There are a variety of weapons to play with, from familiar weapons to brand-new ones. There also exists the old camera angle of the first installment of Doom for the purists.

So how does the gameplay stack up? Incredibly well, a large variety of levels, hidden missions, upgradable weapons to acquire and a myriad of power-ups. It is the classic ultra-violent arcade shooter enough to trigger soccer moms into oblivion reimagined and redefined with respect to modern standards.

While the single-player story is the main focus of the game, the multiplayer of the game is actually fun and now all the multiplayer DLC of the game is absolutely free. We just could not thank you enough Id Software.

In case that was not enough, the game allows the players to make their own maps in the game’s Snapmap feature. Want a nostalgia trip? There is access hidden to each level of the very first Doom game in each story mission.

Gameplay Matters…Even If You Are In Hell

This is a game that not only appeals to the newer audience but manages to keep old-timers of gaming happy at the same time, a remarkable accomplishment. The overall gameplay is fast-paced, over-the-top action in typical Doom fashion, you will see yourself running and gunning hordes of the unholy at breakneck speeds as well as dodging projectiles along the way.

Doom

Trust us, the Doomguy does not simply fancy hiding behind cover after firing a few shots like a nerd, he slays demons faster than Amazon’s same-day delivery ordered at 11:59 pm.

Heavy Metal and Demons

Now what about the soundtrack? It makes committing genocide of demons all the more entertaining, with heavy metal-inspired riffs to heavy bass tracks playing in the background. That is all there is to it.

The sounds of weapons and the pain of the demons may chorus in the background to add a bit of ‘poetic’ value but that’s about it, need we say more?

However, what is exactly new that blends with a tried and tested old-school formula? There are a lot of side missions aside from the main story, more demons to kills, collecting dolls, upgrading of weapons, slaying of demons, collecting weapons and more ceremonial slaughter of the demon horde.

Right, did we mention the mass-extinction of demons? You know, just to be double sure that we did not leave something out. Regardless, the length of the game is enough to keep any self-respecting gamer occupied and in case one is not aware, the length of Doom: Eternal is said to be almost twice the size and twice as long as this game. Wow, that’s a lot of dead demons.

In conclusion, is the game worth picking up? A big stamp of approval from us and all the other gamers that bought it. Since the game is very likely to be on sale and that there are great used deals, the low prices would make it a bargain to have in any gamer’s collection. A perfect contrast to the gritty and sometimes biased military shooters that populate the gaming industry today.
