Surviving and progressing in The Last Caretaker depends heavily on crafting, and crafting depends entirely on materials. You won’t find ready-made resources and materials lying around in the game world. Instead, the material you build comes from the junk and scrap scattered throughout the world by recycling them. This The Last Caretaker Materials Guide will show you everything that you need to know about materials in The Last Caretaker.
How to Find Scrap Items in The Last Caretaker
Materials do not exist in raw form. To get them, you first need to find junk items, which appear in two main sizes: small scraps or large junk. Smaller scrap pieces can be picked up easily and stored in your inventory. These are easy to carry and are usually found scattered around areas you explore.
Larger junk items work a little differently. If a Recycler is nearby, you can manually carry these big objects and place them directly into the machine. If the Recycler is far away, using the Dismantle Tool is the better option. This tool breaks large objects into smaller scrap pieces, making them easier to transport and recycle later.
Both methods lead to the same result, so it mainly depends on convenience and distance.
Using the Recycler Properly
The Recycler is the most important machine when it comes to turning scrap into usable materials. Luckily, there is one installed on your boat, so you always have access to it no matter where you travel.
When recycling small scrap items, interact with the Recycler and move the scrap into the top slot of its interface. To do it faster, there is also an option to add all trash items at once automatically. You can do it by pressing ‘F’.
Large junk objects do not need interaction with the Recycler. Once dropped into the Recycler, they are processed automatically without opening the menu.
After recycling finishes, the usable materials appear on the right side of the machine. These are the resources you will later use for crafting and building different items.
Collecting Scrap While Sailing
Your boat in ‘The Last Caretaker’ is not just for travel; it is also a tool for gathering materials. On the back of the boat, there is a Net machine that allows you to collect scrap while moving across the water.
To use it, lower the Net into the sea using the switch. The longer it stays down, the more junk it collects. Once enough time has passed, raise the Net back up and check the container attached to the machine. All collected scraps can then be taken to the Recycler and processed like any other junk.
This method is especially useful when traveling long distances, as it lets you gather materials without stopping exploration.
