Super Smash Bros Ultimate Olimar Guide
Below we have listed all the attacks that are specific and special to Olimar. Refer to each attack for a better understanding of how Olimar combats in the stage.
Introduction
Captain Olimar comes in the Smash game featuring his unique attacks where he is accompanied by his loyal Pikmin helpers. Olimar depends on his Pikmin which is why he has to be arranging and keeping track of his helpers.
Olimar can have up to three Pikmins at a time, where the different colored Pikmin come in the order or Red, Yellow, Blue, White and Purple.
Grounded Attacks
This section of the guide contains all the grounded attacks that Olimar can perform while on the stage.
Neutral Attacks
Olimar has two Neutral Attacks, where he strikes with a one two punch sequence dealing 4 damage each. The jab is not the fastest combo in the game, but does the job. The best an enemy can do to counter Olimar’s jab is to cancel their blocking with a shield grab up close.
Defensive Attacks
Olimar has two Defensive Attacks. The first is the Ledge attack that deals 9 damage, while both the Wake-up attacks deal 7 damage each.
Dash Attack
Olimar’s Dash attack deals 7, 4 damage. In the dash, Olimar flips heels over head toward the enemy with a cartwheel attack. The move will hit twice if you connect it in the earliest stage of the move, launching enemies up into a juggable position mid-air.
Even if you hit late, it still pops the enemy up, though deals less damage. If this attack is shielded, it leaves Olimar at a disadvantage up close.
Smashes
Olimar has three smash attacks.
Side Smash
In this attack, Olimar grabs the next Pikmin and hurls it straight ahead. The tossed Pikmin travel out towards the enemy with double the reach of a dash attack.
The most damage is dealt at the earliest part of the throw, and will keep Olimar safe if the opponent retaliates after shielding the throws.
Up Smash
In this attack, Olimar flips the next Pikmin straight up in the air in front of him. this attack offers great coverage in front and above Olimar, and also guarantees to keep Olimar safe if the enemy goes for an attack.
The only risky Pikmin for this strike is the white one, which inflicts a lot less shield-stun on defenders.
Down Smash
For this attack, Olimar requires at least two Pikmin at his side. In this attack, Olimar directs two Pikmin to spread out and strike out at both sides simultaneously. This fast smash attack is great in covering both angles in front and behind Olimar, and offers some breathing space if there are many enemies cornering him.
Tilts
Olimar has three Tilt Attacks.
Side Tilt
This attack deals 11 damage, where Olimar slaps with a bit hand in front towards the enemy. This is one of the slowest tilt attacks in the game, so you might be better of replying on dash attacks or neutral air attack.
Up Tilt
This attack deals 0.6×5, 4 damage. In this attack, Olimar hops in place, pirouettes upward, with hits to both sides with a flurry of weaker strikes before popping up anyone in the way with a twirling headbutt.
Enemies on either side of the ground are pulled into this swirl of hits and is launched upward. This attack is great since it covers both angles in front and back, though you have to be careful with smaller or crouching enemies, who can easily dodge this attack and retaliate.
Down Tilt
This attack deals 6 damage, where Olimar slides forward, bopping anyone in the way with a helmet headbutt. The speed of this this attack is the same as Up Tilt, but with a much lower profile.
Like up tilt, it can be punished if shielded, though it’s not quite as unsafe, and doesn’t provide the same visual cue that Olimar will be briefly open afterward. On the plus side, it doesn’t miss close, small enemies in front like up tilt often does.
Grabs
In the grab attack, Olimar requires at least one Pikmin to be at his side, where he sends the little helpers forward to grab the enemy. The more Pikmin you have, the farther the reach of the grab.
The throw selection is pretty typical, with front and back throws choosing a stage edge to press toward, and up and down throws offering different kinds of potential options right afterward. The variety is more in which Pikmin you use for the initial grab. For max reach, go for a grab with a white Pikmin up next.
If you’re purely interested in throw damage, the blue Pikmin is your pick. And, while the red Pikmin’s throw damage is lower, this leads to better follow-up juggle position after up and down throws, making red the best choice for combos and mix-up pressure.
Aerial Attacks
This section of the guide will cover all the Aerial attacks that Olimar has.
Neutral Air Attack
In this attack, Olimar stretches out his arms to spin multiple times. Whichever part of the body Olimar hits the enemy, it will deal damage. This attack also stays active for a long time, making it a good all purpose jumping move.
This attack also does not require any Pikmin that Olimar has to rely on, and is a great option to fall on standing enemies, or going air to air against airborne enemies.
Forward Air Attack
In this attack, Olimar swings a Pikmin forward, hitting anyone that is in front of him. though this attack is toward the front of Olimar, it starts just above his head, and then going forward down.
Back Air Attack
In this attack, Olimar turns in midair and swings a Pikmin behind him. this attack is almost similar to forward air attack, but the trajectory is towards Olimar’s back. The attack also does not start by aiming upward like the forward air attack, which allow you to throw the Pikmin faster.
Up Air Attack
In this attack, spins a Pikmin above his head, covering all diagonal angles in front and back. This is a great attack if you want to ward off airborne enemies or opponents coming in from the sky. The attack is relatively fast and can even work falling at ground target, setting up immediate up tilt if it hits them as Olimar lands.
Down Air Attack
In this attack, Olimar grabs a Pikmin and throws it straight down. The attack is great to throw at grounded enemies, or to hit revering opponents.
If you hit a victim directly below, it spikes them, potentially scoring a knockout outright offstage, or bouncing them off the floor for a juggle follow up midstage.
Special Moves
Olimar has 4 special moves. All of them are detailed below.
Neutral Special – Pikmin Pluck
This special is useful only on the ground. You can try to use it in the air, but it results in a feckless Olimar gesturing uselessly. Used on the ground, it plucks up another Pikmin from the earth, if there’s space for a new member on Olimar’s field team.
Pikmin have small amounts of health, from the weakest (white) at 5, to the sturdiest (purple) at 11. Therefore, a handful of anyone’s attacks can defeat any individual Pikmin, but it’s easy for you to replace them.
Opponents will probably be more focused on dodging through the Pikmin attacks than squishing them, so usually when you lose them, it’s to incidental hits in the chaos, or because they plunged off the side of the stage. To rearrange your team on purpose, you might toss certain colors off yourself
Side Special – Pikmin Throw
In this attack, Olimar tosses the Pikmin towards the enemy. This is a fast attack that is sort of a projectile throw that goes really far.
When any Pikmin except purple gets near an opponent who isn’t shielding already, they cling to them. If a Pikmin isn’t knocked off by attacks that hit them, they swat over and over while clinging, hitting up to 10 times or more! Most Pikmin are capable of dishing out up to 20% damage after a connected Pikmin Throw. The lower a target’s damage percentage, the easier it is for a clinging Pikmin to stack up lots of hits. On medium-to-high-damage victims, Pikmin can’t hit as many times.
Up Special – Winged Pikmin
In this attack, Pikmin with wings arrive and lift Olimar up to safety. This is a recovery option best to use when you are desperate to return back to stage. The Pikmin though have a certain time or energy that they can carry Olimar. Once they are exhausted, Olimar falls helplessly towards the ground.
Olimar is extremely maneuverable while being carried by Winged Pikmin. How long they carry him depends on how recently they’ve been summoned, and how many support Pikmin tag along for the ride. If you’re using Winged Pikmin repeatedly, and taking all three current Pikmin with Olimar, Winged Pikmin doesn’t last long at all. But if the Winged Pikmin are well-rested and no Pikmin are taken with, this up special lets Olimar travel farther and faster in midair than almost anyone else can.
Down Special – Pikmin Order
In this attack Olimar whistles and orders the Pikmin to regroup themselves. This move offers Olimar an armor that absorbs attack for some time in situations where damage cannot be dealt to Olimar at all.
This is a way to call all the Pikmin back towards Olimar, especially when they are dispersed around after your throws. If all Pikmin are already following Olimar, Pikmin Order forces them to align themselves in the standard order: red, yellow, blue, white, purple. For instance, if you’ve deployed purple, blue, and red Pikmin, they form up on Olimar in order red-blue-purple.
If all Pikmin are already formed up on Olimar and they’re already adhering to the standard order, then they rotate forward. In the previous example, if three Pikmin are already aligned on Olimar in order red-blue-purple, they then rotate to blue-purple-red.
Final Smash – End of Day
In the Final Smash, Olimar and his trusty Pikmin get into a rocket ship, where it launches and can be aimed a little on the way up and down when it comes crashing back to the ground. The attack deals heavy damage on impact if anyone is in the way of the rocket ship.
