StarRupture is a survival game, and for this, you need to be at the top of your game at everything, be that harvesting resources, crafting items, or defending yourself. It also includes taking care of your own health and basic needs because StarRupture features mechanics where you must take care of yourself as well as your base. While the starting tutorial does a good job of explaining different things to you, there are some key elements that it misses, and those include how to take care of your own self. This is where we come in. Our StarRupture Survival Guide details everything that you need to know to survive in the game and take care of your basics easily.
Survival Guide – StarRupture
There are many things that you need to consider to stay alive on the map. We will discuss them one by one below:
Basic Controls
Even though the tutorial shows how to mine using the Harvester and break down structures, it skips over something very important: how to open your inventory. The usual/generic inventory key I doesn’t work here. To access your items, press Tab. This is the only way to eat food, drink, and manage consumables that keep you alive.
Understanding Your Status Bars
Your character’s survival is controlled by several meters, and ignoring any of them can lead to sudden death.
- Shield – The shield is your first line of defense and slowly restores itself over time. However, it won’t recharge if you are standing in radiation zones or infection clouds. You must leave those areas to recover the shield.
- Health – Health works as expected. Enemies on Arcadia-7 will attack you on sight, and if your health reaches zero, your run is over.
- Calories – Calories represent hunger. If this bar empties, you will start taking damage, so eating regularly is essential. Each food also has calories associated with it.
- Hydration – Hydration is even more dangerous early on. It drains constantly, and once it hits zero, you lose health very quickly. This is often why players die during the tutorial without realizing why.
- Toxicity – Toxicity builds up from eating certain foods. While it causes negative effects at high levels, it won’t directly kill you. Still, keeping it under control makes survival much easier.
Restoring Health
Healing health is not easy in the game. One of the few healing items available is Star Tears, which are found on small, normal-looking rocks scattered around the world. They restore a chunk of health, about 20 HP, when eaten, but also slightly increase toxicity by 5 points, so they should be used carefully.
Later on, progressing through Level 3 of Future Health Solutions unlocks a proper healing Med Tool that lets you recover health more reliably. Until then, Star Tears are your main option when things go wrong.
Staying Hydrated
Hydration is the most common cause of early death. One of the best hydration sources is the Hydrobulb, a water-filled plant that grows near clean water. These plants are easy to find and refill often. Drinking from them quickly restores hydration and stops health loss.
The area around the lake north of your landing zone is especially useful, as it has plenty of Hydrobulbs nearby. Staying close to this area early on can make survival much easier.
Another hydration option is orange colored Prickler, which grows on tall purple cactus plants. Eating a Prickler restores both calories and hydration, making it a very efficient survival food early on. It gives you 5 Calories and 8 Hydration Points.
Finding Food
The easiest food to find is Polifruit. These orange plants grow almost everywhere and provide a small amount of 11 calories. They aren’t too powerful, but they are reliable and should always be collected while exploring.
Pricklers can also be eaten for calories, giving you some flexibility when food is running low. As you progress and unlock better crafting options, such as the Food Station, you can turn basic plants into stronger meals.
Handling Toxicity
Some food items help you survive as discussed above, but also increase toxicity. To reduce toxicity, you need Purplant, which are purple mushrooms that grow on rocks. Eating Purplant lowers toxicity significantly by 40 points, but it also removes any positive buffs you currently have.
Radioactive Areas
Radiation zones are easy to spot thanks to their bright green glow. Staying inside them fills a radiation meter and prevents your shield from working. The solution is simple: leave the area. Distance alone is enough to stop the damage.
Radiation zones can technically be explored early, but it is very risky. Without enough food, hydration items, and healing options, survival time is extremely short. These areas are better left alone until you are better prepared.
Infection Clouds
Infection clouds are made when blue Vermin enemies explode after taking damage. These clouds form quickly after killing and can kill you if you stay inside them. The safest option is to move away immediately after killing these enemies. You don’t need to plan, just run.
Vermin enemies are aggressive and fast. The safest way to deal with them is to attack continuously until they are gone, then move away from the area. Infection clouds can’t be avoided completely, so positioning and quick movement are key to surviving fights.
If your character suddenly collapses, check your meters first. Hydration is often the problem, especially if you ignored warnings. Keeping Hydrobulbs and Polifruit in your inventory.
