Star Citizen has just raised over $250 million in crowdfunding, mainly because of the game purchases that have been made by over 2.4 million players. The milestone was reached just after the CitizenCon event, highlighting the strongest year for the game ever.
Much of the funding that the crowdfunding gathered was primarily because of the players purchasing newer ships. Many of the players made pledges in exchange for rare ships that they could use in the game. The game offers a starter pack for ships while having other expensive options that reach as much as $725.
Star Citizen managed to pull in $37 million this year alone, of which $9 million were made in just the month of November. The $200 million mark was broken this time last year, and the game has since got $50 million. This is a strong signal to the developers and the community of how the players want to see this ambitious project complete.
Star Citizen is developed by Cloud Imperium Games and has been in development since 2012. The game has been in beta ever since, with multiple versions coming out over the years. The project has always been crowdfunded, and the developers put on much of the funds to bring in a lot of content for the backers.
The studio was busy making a lot of new content over the course of this year. In the recent CitizenCon event, the studio shared what they have been working on, with a new city-planet called ArcCorp, new moons, and new female playable characters. Additionally, the content also includes new areas to explore, such as mines to harvest resource materials, and a new law and order system.
CIG went on to elaborate on the new law and order system where it talked about prisoners or locked up players that will have to spend time in prison after being sentenced. Players can then reduce their time in prison by mining resources and completing other jobs available in the prison.
