Sony Has Reportedly Cut PS5 Launch Production by 4 Million Units

PS5 Update USB

According to a new report, Sony has cut down its launch production of PS5 consoles by 4 million units. The cut has been made in the overall production volume of PS5 for the fiscal year ending March 2021. According to Bloomberg, the initial production of PS5 is now down to 11 million units because of the unsteady production yield of the console’s custom-designed system-on-chip.

Previously, we got to know in June that Sony has apparently started the production of the PS5 console and according to Bloomberg’s report in April, the initial target for this initial production was already limited for the first year. The latest report now comes in view of the chip problems that apparently Sony is having with the manufacturing for its next-gen console. The new system-on-chip production yields as low as 50 percent and this has seriously hindered the production of the PS5 console.

This low yield has made Sony miss its expected launch production target and because of this, the production has now been cut down by 4 million units. According to Sony, the yields are getting better with every passing day, but it is still not good and stable enough to further increase the production or try to achieve the initial goal set by Sony. We already knew that the next-gen consoles could be short in supply for a good amount of time due to the current situation in the world but this could mean that supplies could be even shorter than anticipated with many fans waiting for their consoles.

With Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X coming out on November 10, 2020, Sony still has to announce the price and a release date of its PS5 console. A PlayStation 5 Showcase event is scheduled for September 16, 2020, during which it is expected that Sony will finally announce the release date and price of the console. So far, the rumored prices of the disc version of PS5 is $449 and Digital Edition could be $399.
