Trading Guide – Pokemon Sword and Shield
Our Pokemon Sword and Shield Trading Guide details everything that you need to know about trading in Pokemon Sword and Shield. There are three different ways to trade Pokemon in Pokemon Sword and Shield. They are detailed below.
Unlocking Y-Comm
The Y-Comm is the basic screen that is used to trading and you unlock is pretty early in the game. Simply progress in the main story a little and you will unlock the ability to trade with other Pokemon Trainers from around the world. Once it is unlocked, simply press Y and you will open up the Y-Comm menu which will show you various methods to trade in the game.
Link Trade
If you chose Link Trade, you can trade with a player from around the world. You will have the option of choosing the Pokemon Trainer that you want to trade with in this case. After selecting Link Trade, the game will find another player to match with you before you can start trading with them.
Link Code
The option of Link Code only works if both players enter the same code. This is the best form of trading as it allows you to trade with familiar people such as friends and family. Both of the traders enter the same code and they are matched together so that they can move forward with the trade. This is the best option to evolve your Haunter to Gengar since you will know the person will return your Gengar after it has evolved. During random trades, the other player might not return your Gengar back to you.
Surprise Trade
The third and final form of trade in Pokemon Sword and Shield is the Surprise Trade. If you select this trading method, you will choose your Pokemon and then the game will complete the trade with any random trainer from around the world on its own and you will not need to do anything after selecting your Pokemon that you want to trade.
