With just a few days left before the launch of Call of Duty Modern Warfare, Activision has announced that the game will not contain any loot boxes. The game will instead feature a battle pass, much like the games like Fortnite, Apex Legends and many others.
This will be the first Call of Duty title in the franchise to feature a battle pass of some sort. Everything before this was loot boxes that players had to rely on to get cosmetics and other such items.
The Battle Pass System for Modern Warfare will not launch when the game releases on October 25th. Here’s why: First and foremost, we are all focused on making the Day One experience awesome. Second, it’s important to us that everyone who is playing Modern Warfare has the chance to work their way through the new game and unlock all the rewards that are waiting for you. We expect to launch this system for Modern Warfare later this year.
Understandably there are still questions around how the economy will evolve throughout the post-launch, live seasons. We recognize this will take time to fully demonstrate. Please know we are committed to delivering a fair system guided by the principles we’ve outlined here, and will continue to monitor feedback and player engagement to help us achieve that goal.
Having a battle pass means that players will actually have to play the game to level up the tiers or levels in the battle pass. This will in return reward them for their efforts and grinding. Having a battle pass ensures that players know what rewards they are working for and what kind of items will be rewarded all throughout the battle pass.
Loot boxes on the other hand never tell you what type of item you will be getting, and is just a game of chance where you will only know the rarity of the item that you may get. Loot boxes are highly criticized by the communities and players alike. Following suit of the criticism, Activision has seemingly made this decision to simply remove loot boxes completely, and instead add in a battle pass.
