Killzone Mercenary Vita Servers Shutdown in a Surprise Move by Sony

Killzone Mercenary Vita

Killzone Mercenary servers on the PlayStation Vita console have been shut down by Sony without any warning or notice by the company. There is no doubt that the Vita console is in the last stages of its life, but the shutting down of the servers without any prior warning might have made many unhappy.

Many players online were reporting matchmaking errors online on Reddit. Later, ComicBook confirmed that they were told by the PlayStation Support that the servers have indeed shut down, even though the multiplayer mode is still listed on the game’s page on the PlayStation Store. This comes as a surprise because a prior notice would have made some sense and would have given some time for players to bid their farewell to the game on Vita.

It is also surprising because Sony usually warns players about their shutdown plans like they announced for Driveclub by announcing the server shutdown one year before they actually committed to shutting the servers down for the game. We were also notified about the console production for the Vita that Sony was going to terminate, and eventually followed up on it.

Killzone Mercenary is one of the best games on the PlayStation Vita console since its release seven years ago. The game was a spinoff of the very popular Killzone franchise by Guerilla, just before the release of Killzone: Shadow Fall for the PlayStation 4 that followed. It is certainly too early to shut down the servers for such a good game that was one of the top titles on the Vita. The game was out for only 7 years and was released at the same time Grand Theft Auto V was launched.
