Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch Update Will Break Your Save Data

Baldur’s Gate 3

The next Baldur’s Gate 3 patch update is said to be incompatible with your save data in the current Early Access build of the game. In a pre-patch announcement by Larian Studios, the developer revealed the development has reached a point that it is no longer going to work with your save data.

But Larian Studios has also stated that each patch will come with a secondary branch that will allow you to continue playing the previous versions with your existing save data. That is until you are ready to play the latest version of the game that will roll out soon.

Patch 3 (which hasn’t been named yet) is just around the corner, and with it comes the first changes that affect story. Unfortunately, this means Patch 3 will introduce the first save incompatibility, transitioning to the new version.

Fret not, however! Each patch will come alongside a secondary branch which will allow you to continue playing the previous version with your existing savegames, until you decide you’re ready to play on the latest version. Maybe you’d like to wait for a few patches to pass, for example, before you re-roll. Totally up to you!

In the same announcement post for the Baldur’s Gate 3 patch update, the developer detailed how you can get both the secondary and primary branch of the game and how to download them. If you want to get the previous version of the game (secondary branch), follow the steps below:

  • Right click on the game in your Steam library
  • Select properties
  • Click the BETAS tab
  • In the list under “Select the beta you would like to opt in to“, select patch2
  • Close the properties menu

Larian also states that you should disable automatic updates on Steam to ensure that you still get to play the secondary branch, and the game doesn’t automatically update to the primary branch.
