There are many resources in the Lost Colony map of ARK: Survival Ascended. If you have been exploring this map, you have probably noticed that oil is not very easy to find. There are no big oil fields like on some older maps, which can make early progress feel slow. In this ARK: Lost Colony Oil Farming Guide, we will detail some areas where you can easily farm oil without much trouble.
Best Spots to Farm Oil in ARK: Lost Colony
You won’t see large pools of oil on the map. Instead, oil comes from certain rocks that appear in specific environments. Once you learn those environmental locations, finding oil becomes much easier. Oil mostly shows up along rivers and high-elevation areas.
River
One of the easiest places to collect oil is along a river. Around 54 latitude and 47.4 longitude, there are many oil rocks packed close together. These rocks can be broken easily with an Ankylosaurus and are identified by faint line patterns or striped patterns on the surface.
Staying in this area alone can give you a nice amount of oil. One of the good things about the river is that you don’t get oil from just one place. The entire river path contains oil. If you simply travel along the river, you will keep running into more oil nodes.
Using an Argentavis and an Ankylosaurus makes this process very smooth. In some parts of the river, you can swim a bit and collect even more oil from underwater rocks. Altogether, there are roughly 50 to 60 oil nodes in this river area, most of which are easy to reach and quick to harvest.
Mountain Peaks
If you do not like rivers and want to avoid them, oil can also be found at the top of different mountains. These areas only spawn oil at high elevations, and not every mountain has it.
The main challenge here is visibility. Because of the snow, oil blends into the environment and is easy to miss. On top of that, the nodes are more spread out, which makes this method slower compared to river farming.
Inside a Mountain
Oil can also be found inside the mountain itself. One such location sits at around 68.8 latitude and 46.3 longitude. This area has a cave-like space with a flat section full of oil rocks. There are also some silica pearls nearby, making it a useful place to visit.
This location has 15 to 20 oil nodes. This location is great if you want to gather oil quickly without moving around too much.
Yellow Crystal Spines
Oil can also appear around regions with yellow crystal spines. If you move through these zones, you will eventually come across oil, but it is usually spread out. Most of the time, you will only find a few oil nodes around three to four, which makes it less efficient.
Oil in Water
Most water areas on Lost Colony contain some oil, including lakes. Deeper water contains oil, and farming it requires a large amount of effort because swimming slows you down.
Another area can be found around 27.4 latitude and 15.4 longitude, but again, oil here comes in small pockets rather than large clusters.
Overall, rivers are the most reliable way to farm oil on Lost Colony. They are easy to follow, packed with resources, and do not require much work. Mountain areas also work, but they tend to be slower and harder to spot.
