With the arrival of the Lost Colony map in ARK: Survival Ascended, several new creatures entered the game, and one of the most eye-catching among them is the Malwyn. Its design is unique and instantly grabs attention. In this ARK: Lost Colony Malwyn Guide, we will see how the Malwyn is obtained, where it spawns, and its abilities.
Malwyn Guide – ARK: Lost Colony
Malwyn Spawns and Locations in ARK: Lost Colony
You may notice Malwyns while exploring the city areas on Lost Colony, but these versions aren’t meant for players. Wild Malwyns only appear as mounts used by NPCs, and they cannot be tamed or interacted with in any way.
To get your own Malwyn, you must first find a different creature called the Veilwyn. Veilwyns spawn across the snow regions of the map and are fairly common. A good place to search is near the large central mountain on the map. Once you find one, claiming it is simple. Just crouch next to it, and it becomes yours.
Taming a Malwyn
You cannot tame a Malwyn in the usual way. Instead, a Malwyn is obtained through an evolution process that starts with a Veilwyn.
To begin this process, you need Red Element. Place the Red Element into Veilwyn’s inventory while it is set to companion mode. The game suggests the creature will consume it, but even if it doesn’t visually do so, the evolution will still begin.
Red Element is made using the Blood Forge, and once it is added, the Veilwyn gains a new buff. This buff shows how far the development process has progressed. When it reaches full completion, the Veilwyn becomes ready for its next stage.
From here, progress continues through combat. Killing creatures increases evolution progress, with Zombies and Revenants giving the best results. Once the evolution bar reaches 100%, the Veilwyn can finally be evolved into a Malwyn.
While Malwyns can be bred, the offspring will always be a Veilwyn. This means evolution is required every single time. If a Malwyn dies, it drops souls, but reviving it brings it back as a Veilwyn. This forces you to repeat the entire evolution process, which can be time-consuming. If you store a Malwyn inside a Cryopod, it keeps its form. When released later, it will still be a Malwyn.
Abilities
Malwyn works as a support-focused creature with abilities that help control enemies and strengthen fights. Because of Lost bioengineering, Malwyns are less likely to be noticed by the Lost King’s minions. This makes moving through the city much safer, as you are less likely to trigger unwanted fights.
The Malwyn uses Sanguine abilities, which act as stacking debuffs. By holding the right mouse button on a target, these effects can stack up to 20 times. You can switch between different Sanguine effects using Ctrl + C.
- Sanguine Malediction – It reduces the target’s healing while allowing the Malwyn to gain life steal when attacking that target.
- Sanguine Vulnerability – It increases damage taken by the target with each stack applied.
- Sanguine Fatigue – It reduces stamina over time. At 20 stacks, flying creatures are unable to fly, making this ability extremely effective against aerial enemies.
After applying Sanguine stacks for some time, the Malwyn can instantly teleport to the affected enemy by pressing C, dealing extra damage when it arrives.
Best Roles of Malwyn
Malwyn works best in support and utility roles. Its main strength comes from weakening enemies rather than dealing heavy damage on its own. In group fights, it helps bring down tanky creatures much faster by applying constant debuffs.
Its ability to stop flyers makes it especially dangerous when enemies are landing or leaving their mounts, often catching them off guard.
During boss fights, Malwyn becomes even more valuable. The debuffs increase team damage, while its healing abilities help it survive longer battles. This makes it a strong companion when facing difficult encounters.
