With the release of the Lost Colony map in ARK: Survival Ascended, one creature has made a strong comeback: the Desmodus. Many players already loved this creature due to its distinctive style. In this ARK: Lost Colony Desmodus Guide, we will see how you can find a Desmodus and tame it easily, along with a look at its abilities as well.
Desmodus Guide – ARK: Lost Colony
Spawn and Location
The Desmodus only exists on the Lost Colony map and nowhere else. You won’t see it flying around in the open world. Instead, it lives deep inside caves, where it usually hangs from cave ceilings and walls. Spotting one becomes very easy when you know where to look.
There are only a few known areas across the map where Desmodus spawns, roughly three to four regions in total. One of the locations is Latitude: 32.8, Longitude: 93.6.
Taming a Desmodus
Taming a Desmodus is easy compared to many other creatures in ARK. You will need these things: Blood Packs, Armor, Medical Brews, Grappling Hooks, and Parachutes
To begin, enter a cave and approach the Desmodus you want. Make sure blood packs are already in your inventory. When you get close enough, the Desmodus will grab you and start drinking the blood packs directly from your inventory. Each blood pack consumed increases the tame percentage automatically.
How to Get Blood Packs
There are several ways to collect blood packs. Early on, the easiest option is using a syringe to take blood from your own character. Later, once you already have a Desmodus or Giga Desmodus, you can farm blood packs much faster using them. Another option is the Medical Stand, which allows you to safely extract blood from your tamed creatures.
Since Desmodus caves can be dangerous, it is good to bring extra blood packs and Cryopods. If you’re already deep inside one of these caves, it is always worth taming more than one Desmodus because of how useful they are throughout the game.
The Desmodus can be bred, imprinted, and transferred between servers. It eats both meat and blood packs.
Abilities of Desmodus in ARK: Lost Colony
When it comes to movement, the Desmodus is one of the best flyers available. It moves extremely fast and can change direction freely while flying. It can also glide, although the glide is mostly downward and doesn’t provide much forward distance.
Every time it attacks enemy creatures, it generates blood packs based on the damage dealt. You will gain 1 blood pack per 50 damage dealt. This method is far more efficient than manually extracting blood from your character. When harvesting corpses, the Desmodus only collects raw meat, spoiled meat, and blood packs.
Special Abilities
The Desmodus has several abilities that add to its strength. It can switch to night vision, which adds a red tint to the screen and makes enemies and allies much easier to see in the dark. It also has a life-steal ability that heals 15% of damage dealt.
It also has an invisibility mode. Hold the right mouse button. It is combined with wall-clinging, which is deadly for ambushes. Echolocation is another ability. Hold the left mouse button for this. It pings enemies in range and marks them with a red circle. At night, targets take 20% extra damage.
Sanguine Elixir
One of the biggest advantages of owning a Desmodus is its ability to craft Sanguine Elixir. Crafting one requires around 200 blood packs. The elixir can instantly grant 30% imprint bonus once per baby and can also add 30–40% taming progress to a creature.
To use it correctly, you must open the inventory of the creature you are imprinting or taming and activate the elixir from your own inventory. Using it from the creature’s inventory will not work.
The Desmodus fills multiple roles, which is why it is considered so valuable. In PvP, it allows players to use weapons while flying, making aerial combat, raiding, and ambushes much easier. It performs especially well in caves and tight spaces and can deal serious damage to structures when used correctly.
For PvE players and breeders, the Desmodus saves a massive amount of time and resources. Faster taming, easier imprinting, and reduced breeding effort make it one of the best support creatures available.
The Desmodus fits perfectly into the Lost Colony map and offers value far beyond just PvP combat. It is easy to tame, simple to use, and incredibly flexible.
