8 Game Franchises That Need to Come Back

Game Franchises Come Back

Throughout our lives, we have played and experienced a lot of video games. We like some of these video games while we don’t like some of these video games. However, one thing is for certain, the video game industry is not fair and every major franchise is one small mistake away from failure and bankruptcy. We have seen a lot of excellent franchises going down the grid just because they were not living up to their fan base’s expectations anymore. Here is our list of 8 game franchises that need to come back after facing a similar fate.

Before we begin with our list, the titles that you see below are not commercial failures. Some of these franchises were amazing and fans still adore them. This is the very reason why we want these franchises to come back because fans loved them and yet the developers decided to simply abandon them for no apparent reason. So now without further ado, let’s jump right in the list.

Resistance

Resistance is one of the best franchises to come out from Insomniac Games. It saw the evolution of video games through a single generation because when we compare Resistance 1 with Resistance 3, we can easily see how much of a big leap gaming saw in a single generation. The complete franchise came out on PS3 however we got Resistance: Retribution on PSP and Resistance Burning Skies on PS Vita.

I will agree that Resistance 3 completed the franchise and it was meant to be the concluding chapter in the series but we’ve seen a lot of franchises ending one story and then coming back stronger than ever in the form of a brand new story. Insomniac Games developed and released some of the best titles during this generation however we never got to see a reboot of this amazing franchise. I am pretty sure that we would all love to see the ferocious Chimera make a comeback.

Sunset Overdrive

Sunset Overdrive was originally released as an Xbox One exclusive by Insomniac Games however the title eventually made its way to PC as well. Sunset Overdrive was another brilliant title by Insomniac because it took a brand new direction when it comes to post-apocalyptic worlds. The game was set in Sunset City which infected by OD or the Overcharge Drinkers with some of the wackiest weaponry ever featured in video games.

The game offered great mobility as players were able to grind rails, run on walls and use ziplines to keep the OD at bay as they sliced their heads open with their weapons. The game offered a really bright and colorful take on the post-apocalyptic setting. It never got the traction it deserved back probably because Xbox One was not a really solid competitor to PS4 during its early days however this game is one of the best ones of this generation and it deserves to come back.

Command and Conquer

When I was a little kid, my cousin introduced me to the Command and Conquer franchise and the first title that I ever played was Red Alert 2. I was extremely hooked to the game that I, later on, purchased all the previous titles in the franchise as well as all future ones. However, this once king of strategy games disappointed fans in ways that were extremely hard to fix. Red Alert 3 and Command and Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight were highly disappointing titles which eventually led to the entire franchise’s downfall.

EA is currently working on a remaster of the original Command and Conquer title and it is looking amazing so far. However, remasters are not always the answer to everything. We need a brand new title in the franchise that would ensure the safe future of this once brilliant franchise. With EA now owning the franchise, there is little light of we ever seeing a brand new Command and Conquer title coming out however with the prospect of a remaster of the original Command and Conquer titles, we can surely hope that one day EA delivers a solid brand new title in the franchise.

Left 4 Dead

I am pretty sure that Left 4 Dead is on every such article. It is one of the titles that fans love yet they just can’t have another one. The franchise that allowed gamers to take on hordes and hordes of deadly zombies and focused heavily on co-op gameplay, has been sitting on fan’s Watchlist for ages now. The first title in the franchise was released in 2008 and the second title was released in 2009 however it came with the entire first game so players could simply purchase Left 4 Dead 2 and obtain all features of the first game in it.

It has been 10 years since Left 4 Dead 2 was released and Valve has not said a single word whether Left 4 Dead 3 will ever arrive. Most of the games listed here had terrible final parts which led to their franchise’s death but Left 4 Dead 2 was the best selling in the entire franchise and yet here we are. Valve has not given us a slightest of hints of whether it is interested in continuing the franchise or not. In any case, we are still patiently waiting for Valve to make Left 4 Dead 3.

Midtown Madness

If you grew up in the early 2000s, you would have heard of Midtown Madness or even played this brilliant racing game if you were a racing fan. The first title in the franchise was released in 1999 and the final title that this franchise saw Midtown Madness 3 and it was released in 2003 exclusively for Xbox. It was one of the early racing titles which gave players the freedom to explore cities and feature open-world races where players could ignore the race and roam around the city on their own.

It also came with a wide selection of challenges, a decent selection of vehicles to unlock and drive and a serene cruise mode which allowed players to explore the pretty cities with no strings attached. The cities were booming with activity. Pedestrians, police cars, traffic of all shapes and sizes were present in the game to give them as much activity as possible. The final title was also a really good game but this franchise never saw the fourth title probably because the third title did not perform as well as the first two games in the franchise.

Silent Hill

When we speak about horror games, Silent Hill instantly comes to our mind because it is one of the best horror franchises ever made. However, sadly the future of this amazing franchise currently lies in shambles. This amazing franchise has been scaring us since 1999 however the last title in the franchise came out in 2012 and it was not even as good as the previous titles in the franchise. This sub-standard goodbye is not fitting for this brilliant franchise.

Hideo Kojima was working on a brand new title called Silent Hills during his last days with Konami and we even received a demo P.T. which showed the engine and the brand new first-person gameplay the new Silent Hill game was supposed to feature. However, the project was scrapped when Kojima left Konami and since then we have no word on a possible return for the title. There is no confirmed cancellation of the entire franchise as of now however there is no word when the next title will arrive as well.

Half-Life

Half-Life is yet another title by Valve which is currently one of the most demanded titles and Valve is not showing any interest in it. Fans loved Half-Life and Half-Life 2 and yet here we are with no Half-Life 3 in sight. The first two titles were released in the early days of Steam and were considered the key attractions for the platforms. After this, Steam single-handedly brought life back into PC gaming however it does not make any sense why Valve would just abandon this brilliant franchise after just two titles. The game featured an amazing combination of puzzle-solving, aliens and shooting with a unique array of weapons.

We are still hoping that Valve would consider bringing this critically acclaimed franchise back to life. The story of Gordon Freeman is not yet over and we would love to see him return on the modern consoles as well along with PC so that console players could experience this brilliant game. If Valve is not serious about making Half-Life 3, it should at least deliver a remaster of both the first titles because they are not the games that you could simply forget and many young players would also love to play these amazing games.

Killzone

Everyone who plays on PlayStation is aware of Killzone and how this amazing shooter set a new bar for PlayStation exclusive shooters. The first Killzone was released on PS2 back in 2014 while the last title in the franchise Killzone: Shadowfall was a launching title for PS4. Killzone holds a very special place in all our hearts because this amazing franchise was one of the best shooters back in their days until Killzone: Shadowfall arrived. We can say that this PS4 title killed off the franchise.

Even if Killzone: Shadowfall was a failure, it does not mean that the developers just abandon the whole franchise. Killzone 3 was one of the best shooters on PS3 which featured an amazing singleplayer campaign and supported an equally amazing online mode. I played hours and hours of Killzone 3 online with my friends and those were the best days of this franchise. The current generation is nearing its end so if we ever get a chance of seeing this amazing shooter franchise make a return, it would be on the next generation now.

This concludes our list of 8 game franchises that need to come back. Did we miss your favorite game franchise that you would like to see come back? Let us know in the comments section below.
